Johnson County and Highland prevented Fort Scott Community College's men from breaking into the win column on Saturday afternoon and Monday night.

The Greyhounds lost to Johnson County in overtime Saturday, 75-72, the closest the they have come to breaking their nearly 3-month long losing streak.

Monday night, Fort Scott lost to Highland 65-50. Both games were Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division games that took place at Arnold Arena.

After the teams went basket-for-basket at the start of the first half Monday night, Highland (8-8 East, 13-14 overall) started to pull away with around 4 1/2 minutes to play as Jamar Gulley scored each of the Scotties' last 8 points of the half to give his team a 31-26 lead.

"We got away from what we wanted to do with (Gulley)," Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said. "We wanted to get him going to his left but we let him go right into his comfort zone. At the same time, we had lulls in our defense. I thought we dropped off on our defense for about five minutes in the first half and that pushed them ahead. We have to get better at playing defense for 40 minutes."

Gulley continued his scoring spree, adding 6 of the first 8 point of the second half as Highland extended the lead to 39-30.

The 'Hounds (0-15, 3-24) were able to stay within single digits until Highland went on an 8-0 run to make it 59-43 with 1:23 remaining

Alex Barner led the Greyhounds with 16 points while Jamaal McCoy added 13. Ramell Taylor, one of the conference's top scorers, had 11 rebounds but made only 2 of 11 field-goal tries as he finished with 5 points.

"At this part of the season, people are figuring out how to guard him," Cook said. "I thought he played probably one of the best games he's ever played, to be honest, because he was a decoy tonight. He rebounded and he's starting to learn that he doesn't have to score to change the game. It was frustrating that when we ran plays for him, we weren't setting good picks for him to get his shots."

Gulley finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals for Highland. The only area he didn't lead in was blocked shots -- 6' 10" post Duane Durley had 4 of those.

Ryan Donahoe added 20 points for Highland while Jarvis Benard had 11.

Fort Scott shot 32 percent from the field, making 18 of 57 field-goal attempts. Highland made half of its shots on 26 of 52.

The Scotties outrebounded Fort Scott, 37-35.

The 'Hounds had 15 assists on their 18 field goals, including one on each of their first five baskets of the contest. Robert Hatcher dished 6 of them.

Bryce Kemp entered the game in the second half, the first time he's played in about a month due to an ankle injury. He finished with 5 points and 3 rebounds.

"Bryce gave us a spark," Cook said. "He's still not 100-percent. I wanted to give his ankle a test tonight. He still doesn't have the explosiveness that he had."

Saturday: Johnson County men 75, Fort Scott 72, OT.

The 'Hounds came out strong, taking an 8-0 lead as Johnson County (3-11, 12-14) missed each of its first 6 shots from the field. Another 7-0 run extended Fort Scott's lead to 15-6 with 11:58 left in the first half.

Fort Scott didn't trail until Johnson ended the second half with a 9-0 run in the final three minutes to go up 32-26. The Cavaliers also started the second half with a 9-2 run to extend it to 41-28 with 16:42 remaining.

The Greyhounds fought back, tying it at 49-49 with 8:22 to go on McCoy's layup. They tied it again at 53-53 when Barner made two free throws with 6:23 to go, part of a personal 6-0 run on his part that gave the 'Hounds the lead.

The 'Hounds couldn't pull away, never leading by more than 4 points, but looked as if they had sealed the win with 6.2 seconds to go after Hatcher made two free throws to put them up 65-62.

But Kyle Speed took the inbound pass and went all the way to the other end, where hit banked in a 3-pointer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded to force overtime.

Ryan Magdziarz gave Johnson County the lead in OT as hit scored a 3-pointer to start the extra session. Ramell Taylor scored a layup to bring the 'Hounds within one.

Magdziarz stuck back a teammate's miss and Speed caught the 'Hounds in a defensive switch to score a wide-open layup that put the Cavs up 72-67 with 2:18 to go.

Jason Gougler hit a 3-point shot from the right wing with 2:04 to go but the Greyhounds couldn't score again for nearly 2 minutes. Johnson County hit just enough free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold on for the win.

Only six players scored for Johnson County but five of them reached double figures as they gave head coach Mike Jeffers his 400th coaching victory. David Luster led with 18 points, Speed and Ronnie Boggs each had 16, and Magdziarz and Hayden Parks each scored 11.

Taylor led Fort Scott with 21 points and also had 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. Barner followed with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Robert Mason finished with 12 points.

Fort Scott shot 45 percent from the field, making 26 of 58 field-goal tries. Johnson County shot 37 percent on 22 of 60. Although the 'Hounds had a better percentage at the free-throw line on 14 of 15, Johnson County made more from the line as they went 23 of 36.

Fort Scott also outrebounded Johnson County, 44-33. But the Greyhounds committed 23 turnovers to 12 for the Cavaliers. Johnson County recorded 17 steals.

The Greyhounds travel to division leader Cowley Wednesday night. The game tips off at 7 p.m. at Scott Auditorium, where FSCC has won only twice in about 35 years.
