Jenkins reacts to Americans held in Haiti

Monday, February 1, 2010
WASHINGTON -- Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins contacted the State Department Monday morning upon learning that Topeka resident Drew Culberth is one of ten American citizens being detained in Haiti.

"My concern is about the health and safety of all involved," Jenkins said. "I was relieved to hear back from the State Department that they are working closely with the Haitian government to resolve this issue."

According to the Department of State, the Americans have been in contact with the U.S. Consulate in Haiti who provided them with food and water. Additionally, the State Department informed Jenkins that the Americans would appear before a judge later on Monday.

Individuals with questions about adoption of Haitian orphans who do or do not have a U.S. adoption pending are encouraged to email haitianchildren@state.gov. Individuals who have adoption cases already in progress are still encouraged to email askCI@state.gov.

Jenkins continued, "I will continue working with the Department of State to ensure this issue is resolved as quickly as possible and that Drew Culberth and the other nine Americans return safely home and that the Haitian orphans are properly cared for."
