Uniontown girls handle Erie

UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's girls controlled the game from start to finish as the Eagles (8-5) defeated Erie, 63-37, in a non-league make-up game at the West Bourbon Elementary gymnasium here Thursday night.

Uniontown led 19-6 after one period of play and never looked back. It was 34-15 at the half and 54-21 after three.

"The girls really set the tone early tonight defensively," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "They created some turnovers and they shared the ball especially well tonight."

Abbie Smith and Hayden Rathbun scored 12 points each to lead the Eagles while Tiffany Poyner added 11 and Jacy Ermel and Breanna Esslinger each scored 10.

The Eagles shot 47 percent from the field as they made 27 of 58 field-goal attempts. Rathbun (5 of 8), Poyner (5/6) and Esslinger (4/8) combined to make 14 of 22 shots from the field.

Erie made 17 of 40 shots from the field for 43 percent. The Red Devils did not attempt a 3-point shot.

Rebounds were even at 18-18 but Uniontown had more offensive rebounds, 11-5.

Erie turned the ball over 31 times to just 14 for the Eagles. Poyner had 5 steals for Uniontown while Brook Harper had 3.

Uniontown dished 16 assists as a team with 10 different players handing out at least one. Ermel had 3 assists with Smith, Poyner, Tayler Shook and Hope Jurgensen dishing 2 each.

The Eagles have tonight off, which was originally scheduled as such. They play again Tuesday night when Chetopa visits for a Three Rivers League contest.
