Tuesday, January 26, 2010
PLEASANTON -- Jayhawk-Linn's girls caught fire in the fourth quarter of the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament championship game here Saturday and went on to a 44-33 victory over Uniontown.

The teams will square off again tonight at Mound City. The girls' tip is set for around 6:30 p.m. -- after a junior varsity game finishes -- with the boys' teams to follow.

The Jayhawks (8-3) outscored Uniontown, 15-3, in the fourth quarter, breaking open what had been a very tight ball game.

"We couldn't buy a basket in the fourth quarter," Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said, noting that the Eagles (7-4) made only 1 of 11 field-goal tries in the period.

"It was a big win for us over an excellent basketball team," Jayhawk head coach Charlie Beckman said. "The game was very intense, close to a Sub-State atmosphere."

The Jayhawks went 6 of 10 from the floor in the fourth with Meriel Long hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Jayhawk-Linn was 4 of 10 from behind the arc in the contest while Uniontown went 0 for 8.

Long finished the night with 17 points. Taylor Dawson added 13 for the 'Hawks, who also outrebounded Uniontown, 34-26.

Abbie Smith led Uniontown with 18 points as she made 7 of 14 shots from the field. Jacy Ermel followed with 9 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.
