Tuesday, January 26, 2010
PAOLA -- Fort Scott High School head wrestling coach David Brown only took eight wrestlers to the Paola Tournament here Saturday. But the Tigers finished fifth in the 13-team field as seven of them earned medals.

Fort Scott was in second place, just one point out of first, going into the championship and consolation finals. Shawnee Mission East won the team title with 135 1/2 points, followed by Pittsburg with 113, Eudora 115 1/2, Great Bend 107 1/2 and Fort Scott 105.

Justin Sharp won the 125-pound title with a 9-4 victory over Trevor Marshall of Bishop Miege. To get to the final, he had to defeat the No. 6-ranked wrestler in Class 5A, Austin Haake of Pittsburg.

Paola's summary sheet does not provide results of matches other than the championship and consolation finals.

Denzell Davis, currently ranked No. 4 in Class 4A at 119 pounds, lost in the finals to Pittsburg's Aaron Seybold, 11-1. Seybold is No. 2-ranked in Class 5A.

Tyler Sharp was second at 103 pounds. He lost in the finals, 6-2, to Chris Burley of Great Bend, who is also ranked second at his weight in Class 5A.

Dane Cummings finished second at 171. In the finals, Joe Rutherford of Class 6A Shawnee Mission East recorded a pinfall.

Victor Hughes avenged a loss to Ben Randolph of Shawnee Mission East earlier in the tournament, beating him 10-1 in the consolation final to take third place at 171 pounds.

Michael Durossette was fourth at 135 pounds. Spencer Board of Eudora won the third-place match, 8-4.

Drew Bryant was fourth at 285. Cale Karrigan of Paola won the third-place match by pinfall.

John Metcalf entered at 160 pounds but did not place.

The Tigers return to Southeast Kansas League dual action Thursday night. They will travel to Labette County to take on the host Grizzlies and visiting Independence. Action is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Harrison Gymnasium.
