PARSONS -- Fort Scott Community College's men's and women's basketball games here Saturday night each saw bad starts for the Greyhound teams that could not be overcome when they began to play better in the second half.

Labette's women, ranked 25th in the nation in NJCAA Division I, jumped out to a 14-2 lead even though they did not start especially well themselves and went on to a 75-56 victory over Fort Scott.

Cardinal men found themselves up in front 22-9 early and held on for an 81-69 win after Fort Scott fought back to within 10 points late in the second half.

Both the Greyhound men and women continue conference play Wednesday night at Highland. The women will be playing another ranked team as the Scotties are No. 14 in the current NJCAA Division II poll. That game tips off at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.

NOTES -- This was the fifth consecutive loss for Fort Scott's women and the 12th in a for the men, who haven't won since beating Redlands (Okla.) at Liberal, Kan. on Nov. 20. The last victory for the women was against Garden City at the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville on Jan. 8....

Taylor, since going 0 for 3 from the field and scoring only 3 points in a Jan. 9 loss against Barton County, has scored 96 points and made 39 of 64 shots from the field in his last 5 games. That's a 19.2 scoring average and 61-percent field-goal shooting....

Kelly has made only 7 of 31 shots from the field her last two games and has gone 0 for 9 from behind the 3-point line in that stretch. In those two games, she has scored only 21 total points....

Ironically, this was the week Kelly's hometown newspaper, the Brunswick (Ga.) News, chose to run a profile on her. It can be seen by going to the following links:
