The Greyhounds (0-6 East, 3-15 overall), who also fell to Johnson County, 91-62, Monday night at Overland Park, are on an 11-game losing streak and are currently down to seven players.
Cowley (7-1, 13-7) jumped out to a 22-6 lead and held a 34-21 advantage at halftime. But the 'Hounds made a charge in the second half and got within 4 points, 50-46, with 6:08 remaining.
"As we teach our kids, you can never take a break, no matter what you do," Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said. "You have to fight every minute."
The 'Hounds scored 7 of the first 9 points of the second half as Jamaal McCoy found himself on a hot streak. He scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half and finished the night 7 of 7 from the field. Ironically, in the loss at Johnson County Monday night, McCoy wasn't even credited with a field-goal attempt.
McCoy's layup brought the 'Hounds within 50-46, although he missed a free throw that would have made it a 3-point play.
Fort Scott was still within 57-51 with 3:38 to go before Cowley went on a 12-3 run.
Ramell Taylor finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds for the 'Hounds. McCoy also had 9 boards to lead Fort Scott.
Lance Russell led the Tigers -- who used 13 players -- with 15 points while Tyrus McGee followed with 14 and Canon Fields scored 10 points while dishing 9 assists.
Despite being short-handed, there wasn't much change to the initial game plan, according to Cook, but Cowley's defense caused a change in strategy during the game.
"Tonight, (Cowley) played our set plays very well," Cook said. "So we went to a motion offense and played to Ramell's strengths and (Robert) Hatcher's strengths of penetrating."
In Monday night's game, Johnson County (1-5, 10-8) broke open a tied game, 33-33, at halftime by outscoring the 'Hounds 58-29 in the second half. David Luster had a monster night for the Cavaliers, making 13 of 21 shots from the field, including 9 of 14 3-point shots, to finish with 36 points.
Taylor scored 23 for Fort Scott while Alex Barner added 17.
The Greyhounds will travel to Parsons to take on Labette at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night. The Cardinals (1-5, 6-12) will be the first conference team they meet who do not have an overall winning record.
"We've played the top five teams in our conference," Cook said. "We've played Coffeyville, Neosho, Cowley, Independence, Allen -- and Johnson County won the (Division II) National Championship last year. We're fighting with them and we're close to turning the corner."
