Fort Scott's women defeated Garden City, 60-58, Friday night but lost to Barton County in overtime, 77-73, Saturday. Greyhound men lost to Garden City, 53-46, Friday and to Barton County, 75-65, Saturday.
Friday women: Fort Scott 60, Garden City 58.
Fort Scott's women (8-6) used an advantage at the free-throw line to prevail over Garden City (5-10). The 'Hounds made 20 of 27 charity tosses as the Broncbusters committed 22 personal fouls.
Garden City was just 7 of 13 at the free-throw line. The Busters shot better from the field (42 percent to 35) and outrebounded the 'Hounds 42-35.
Brittany Demery led Fort Scott with 23 points as she made 7 of 15 fielders and 9 of 10 free throws. Valencia Kelly followed with 18 points while Shadara Hampton added 15.
LeMesia Abbott led Garden City with 15 points. Cheree Freeman added 13 and Marisela Rodriguez 12.
Friday men: Garden City 53, Fort Scott 46.
The Greyhounds (3-11) scored the third-fewest points the program has recorded since shot clocks became part of the mens' game. Their two lowest point totals were also set in Jayhawk Shootout games.
Garden City (9-6) led 31-23 at the half. They outrebounded the Greyhounds, 35-29. Chris McHenry led in scoring with 18 points while Vince Banks added 16.
Alex Barner, playing for the first time this season after wrapping up football season, led the 'Hounds with 12 points while Ramell Taylor added 10.
Both teams shot 40 percent from the field. Fort Scott went 20 for 50 while Garden City was 19 of 48.
Saturday women: Barton County 77, Fort Scott 73, OT.
The Cougars (7-8) gained revenge for a 62-59 loss to the Greyhounds at Arnold Arena in November.
Fort Scott held the advantage in most areas but couldn't overcome 28 turnovers.
Kelly went 10 of 26 from the field to lead all scorers with 26 points. Hampton added 15 for the Greyhounds while Demery finished with 12 and Kasey Teich scored 11.
Annie Kassango led Barton County with 20 points while Raven Ward added 18, Alisha Fanisher 16 and Hannah Rotlollo 10. Those four combined for 64 points in this meeting, 10 more than they did in the first game.
Saturday men: Garden City 75, Fort Scott 65.
Barton County (11-5) shot 56 percent from the field, making 29 of 52 shots, while holding the Greyhounds to 42 percent on 24 of 57.
Fort Scott connected on just 11 of 36 field-goal tries in the first half (31 percent).
Bryce Kemp led Fort Scott with 15 points while Jamal McCoy added 14. Robert Hatcher chipped in with 12 and Barner added 10 more. Taylor was held to 3 points as he attempted just 3 field goals.
Karon Burton led Barton County with 18 points while Ronald Baker added 17, Ebenezer Davis 13 and Joseph Reid 11. They combined to make 23 of 32 shots from the field.
Barner and McCoy grabbed 7 rebounds each for the Greyhounds, who won the battle of the boards, 34-30.
Both Fort Scott teams resume conference play Wednesday night at Allen County. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. with the men scheduled to follow at 8.
NOTES -- Fort Scott's women received a forfeit from Pratt during the holiday break. Pratt had to forfeit three games....
The Western Division dominated the Shootout. Five women's teams and four men's teams swept their opponents (Northeastern Oklahoma A&M was a West team for the Shootout). On the East side, only Johnson County and Labette women and Kansas City and Highland men won both their games....
