Mary Elizabeth Van Patten, age 85, died early Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, at Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Trintedad, Colo., the daughter of E. Belton and Ruby May Casebeer Fowler.
She married Leonard Orville Van Patten on Feb. 14, 1952. He preceded her in death on June 6, 2000.
While living in Joplin, Mo., Mary attended Stone Tabernacle, where she served by working in various capacities.
She especially enjoyed singing.
After moving to Fort Scott, she attended Christian Gospel Chapel.
Survivors include five sons: Tyrone Mitchell, Las Vegas, Nev.; Timothy Van Patten and wife Berea, Fort Scott; Anthony Van Patten and wife Connie, Owasso, Okla.; Andrew Van Patten and wife Gina, Tulsa, Okla.; and Lamont Van Patten and wife Sandra, Houston, Texas; two daughters: Janie Harwood, Corpus Christy, Texas; and Jeton Wilson and husband Rich, Corpus Christy, Texas.
Also surviving is one sister, Patsy Bryant, Paducah, Texas; as well as 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Gaston Fowler and Melvin Fowler, a sister, Lois Hollingsworth, as well as her parents.
Pastor Timothy Van Patten will conduct funeral services Monday, Jan. 4, in the Cheney Witt Chapel.
Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery, Fort Scott.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott.
