JOY Sunday School Class held its Dec. 21 meeting in Christian Church bungalow with nine members enjoying a variety of chicken dinners. Vegetables, salads and fruits with chocolate desserts filled the table. No business meeting was held and the yearly tradition of filling the Cookie Boxes to be given to friends of the class at this season. Thirty green or red plastic boxes were filled by Patty Peterson, the president and her helpers including Gary Peterson, John and Vera and Wayne Parrish, Mae Watt, Betty Dehn, Mary V. Shead and Pastor David Peterson. Each chose the ones he or she would deliver before Christmas Day. The Jan. 18, 2010, meeting will be held on the third Monday, of the new year weather permitting.
Peggy Bigley died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009 in the Evergreen Care Unit, Olathe, Kan. Graveside services were held on Dec. 28, in Fort Scott National Cemetery, beside her husband David Bigley, Sr. Peggy grew up in Pleasanton, Kan. She married David Bigley Sr. in Kansas City in l947 where he was a policeman. Upon his retirement they moved to Arcadia where she was very active in Ladies Aid and Class No. 10 of Christian Church. She was a famous quilt maker and was proud to show them at Craft Fairs and to her friends. Condolences to her family.
For several years, Patty Peterson has had a Celebration of Jesus Birth in the form of an annual brunch inviting her friends to her home. Her daughter, Kristin Girard came from Joplin and as usual read an interesting article in keeping with the season. The home and table were decorated in fashion and fine foods were enjoyed by the ten ladies including Mae Watt, Hailey Sprague, Cathlene Allen, Shirley Garrett, Mary Lee Payne, Olga Bridgewater, Linda Bridgewater, Willa Cable and Mary V. Shead.
An interesting item was read recently by friends in this area entitled "Guthrie Motors." Thank you for 49 years of business! Note has been made of the death of a former Arcadian, Norma Sisney Shumate who died this month in Nevada Care Center. She is the last member of the Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Sisney Sr. family who raised their family in and around Arcadia. Condolences to the many relatives.
Oral Roberts, 91, died December 15, 2009 in California of Pneumonia Complications. He built ORU in Tulsa, Okla., after he had been a traveling evangelist under tent services. Marvin Garrett, formerly of Arcadia, in the 1940's moved to Oregon and was one of the truck drivers that moved the tents from town to town.
