A Fort Scott resident is getting a brighter Christmas this year thanks to a $2 instant scratch ticket.

Carey Lockwood scratched off all 10 words needed on a $2 Holiday Crossword instant scratch ticket to win the $20,000 grand prize. He said he had to check the ticket about eight times to make sure he did not make any mistakes.

"I was pretty excited, I've never won anything that big," he said.

Lockwood said he revealed the first five or six words when he noticed some letters he overlooked. He kept scratching until the 10th word was revealed when he said to himself, "I got this ... I got it."

After taxes are taken out, Lockwood will receive about $14,000, about which he remains humble and positive.

"I won a little cash," he said. "It better than a stab in the eye."

Lockwood said he has won money with the lottery in the past, but nothing this large. He said he had won $2,000 on a $2 Bonus Crossword ticket and $3,311 playing KENO. Since winning the $2,000 prize Lockwood said he has scratched tickets about two or three times per week.

"If I was to figure out what I've spent and what I've won ... I'd say I'm a ways ahead now," he said.

As for spending the money, Lockwood has a plan. Aside from paying some bills and helping with Christmas, he said he plans to build a porch on the back of his house and possibly purchase an all-terrain vehicle.

"I that will pretty well eat it all up," Lockwood said. "I don't think the kids will get a ton of it, to put it that way."

When asked if he told many people of his winnings, Lockwood said, "I didn't have to, it got around pretty well on it's own ... it spread like wild fire."

The winning ticket was purchased at Pump N Pete's of Fort Scott, located at 1920 S. Main in Fort Scott.

The Rich Get Richer...must be nice

>> the Rich GET Richer.......

I call BS on that.

Carey has been involved in the family business working 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week for 35 years, every dollar that Carey and Steve Lockwood have they've earned.

Nice to see a well liked local win for a change.

My congrats to Carey& Connie Lockwood.

He has more than enough money by owning lockwood's. you can't tell me the man is hurting for money. It just would be nice to see someone who actually needs the money win. He dosen't need a new porch, their are people who actually could use it for better things. But you probably wouldt know what its like to struggle, and i am sure carey is pretty set with money without this win

I also call bs on all kansasFirefighter has to say. Carey and Connie Lockwood deserve it....Carey is a vey hard working and kind man. They have worked so hard to get Lockwoods going and to keep it going...in this day and age keeping a shop open is hard to do BUT I guess kansasFirefighter wouldn't know anything about that. My congrats go out....Looking like a great New Year for them.

KansasFirefighter you are one jealous person.

Do you actually think that Carey should feel guilty for playing a scratch off lottery ticket and winning because you think he has enough money already? Oh please.

How about being happy for someone's good fortune.

I don't know the guy personally but I'm happy for him and he can spend HIS money whatever way he wants to.

Kansas firefighter i don't know who you are and frankly i could care in the least. who are you to assume that because Carey and Steve own a local business that they are rich. you have no clue if the business cost more that they take in guess what they don't get paid. i think your jealousy should consume you and cry to yourself for your misfortunes. i hope life gives you the what you ask for and right now it is nothing. Carey congrats and have much deserved fun with the money you and Connie have won. to all the haters SHUT UP and mind your own dame business.....

Firefighter - "It just would be nice to see someone who actually needs the money win." Do you believe that a person who is about to be foreclosed on, out of work, or who struggles to get by paycheck to paycheck should be buying scratch-off tickets? I would like to know what kind of person you think should win!!! Then justify why they should be gambling in the first place. Your own comments could be justification for why "the rich get richer". Don't be mad at the winners. I am glad someone is winning - gives the rest of us hope!!!!

lol ok yeah you dont get it. Maybe those people play the lottery to hope to hit it big. you know spend a few bucks here or their. But yeah justification is needed alright. this topic is dead oh and i am so freaking mad you dont even know HOW Flipping mad i am alright

"Do you believe that a person who is about to be foreclosed on, out of work, or who struggles to get by paycheck to paycheck should be buying scratch-off tickets?"

They can't. Money is tied up in beer and cigarettes.

-- Posted by FSCitizen on Tue, Jan 5, 2010, at 3:10 PM

yeah lol you people know so much about those people beer and ciggerettes wow thats classy

-- Posted by KansasFirefighter on Tue, Jan 5, 2010, at 3:26 PM

KS firefighter - who should be the lottery winners? Why are you so upset about who won? I am interested, even in a "dead topic"!!!
