Jayhawks sweep Marmaton Valley

MOUND CITY -- Jayhawk-Linn's girls jumped out to a 31-2 lead after one period of play here Tuesday night and went on to a 62-21 whitewashing of Marmaton Valley in non-league play.

Jayhawk boys took a 37-35 victory over Marmaton Valley.

Chelsea Beckman led Jayhawk girls (5-0) with 13 points while Taylor Dawson scored 12. According to Jayhawk stats, Beckman made all 6 shots she took from the field while Dawson went 6 for 7.

Shelby Krull added 10 points as she made 5 of 6 from the field. Overall, Jayhawk-Linn was 30 of 58 for 52 percent.

Dawson grabbed 9 rebounds for the 'Hawks, who committed only 7 turnovers.

Only four players scored for Marmaton Valley (1-4), none of whom had more than 7 points.

"We played well at a high level,' Jayhawk head coach Charlie Beckman said. "Our experience showed against a very young Marmaton Valley team. Our defense set up our offense very well."

Jayhawk boys (2-3) managed to avoid overtime when the officials rules that a Marmaton Valley shooter had his foot on the 3-point line. Instead of a tie score at 36-36, Jayhawk-Linn still led by one point.

The Jayhawks were fouled and hit one of the two free throws. The Wildcats (2-3) were unable to get a shot off before the final buzzer.

Marmaton Valley had gone to double overtime and a single overtime in its previous two games.

Clayton Dierksen led the Jayhawks with 22 points. Taylor Kellerman followed with 6.

Both teams play at Frontenac Friday night.
