He was born on Jan. 19, 1930 in Prescott, Kan. He was the seventh of nine children born to Chester W. and Mary E. Shafer.
He served his country in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 before moving to Bethany, Okla.
He attended Bethany Nazarene College then became the proud owner of the Mobile Gas Station at NW 39th Expressway and Peniel Avenue.
Chester worked as a salesman for Crane Supply Co. and Hajoca Plumbing Company until his retirement.
He was active in church work most of his adult life.
Chester is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Alta Mae (Lewis), two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife Shirley W. (Beck), daughters Brenda Nealy and husband Jerry of Flower Mound, Texas; Carla Jennings and husband Shaum of Warr Acres, Okla.; stepdaughter Jennifer Beck of Bethany, Okla.
Chester has five grand children, Erica Bracco, Carla Mae Nealy, JJ Nealy, Christopher Jennings, Taryn Jennings and five great-grandchildren, also one brother, Alan Shafer, Kan., and sisters; Ina Kite, Mo., Betty Messer, Kan., and Vera McCormic, Mo., also many nieces and nephews along with many friends too numerous to mention..
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 in the Chapel of The Good Shepherd at McNeil's Mustang Funeral Service with interment at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan.
