Broken Arrow sweeps Willard openers

WILLARD, Mo. -- Broken Arrow, the largest school in Oklahoma, swept Fort Scott High's basketball teams on the first night of the Willard Four-State Classic here Thursday night.

Fort Scott's girls lost to Broken Arrow, which also calls its teams the Tigers, 43-31. Fort Scott's boys fell 63-31.

Broken Arrow held Fort Scott High's girls to a single first-quarter point and held on to take a 43-31 victory.

The Tigers (0-1) didn't get on the board until Jolee Sharp hit a free throw with 10 seconds remaining in the period. This was after Broken Arrow (1-1) had scored the game's first 13 points.

Fort Scott fought hard and was able to get within 6 points at 32-26 with around five minutes to go. But without anyone other than Sharp able to provide any scoring, the Tigers could not finish the rally.

Valerie Santiago led Broken Arrow with 13 points while Chelsea Dennis added 12. Sharp finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds for Fort Scott. No other Tiger had more than 4 points.

Fort Scott committed 11 of its 28 turnovers in the opening stanza and 10 more in the fourth. Broken Arrow had just 16 turnovers the entire game. Fort Scott outrebounded Broken Arrow, 42-34.

Unofficially, Fort Scott shot 22 percent from the field, finishing the night at 10 of 46 after missing all eight fielders in the first. Broken Arrow finished at 30 percent on 16 of 54.

Fort Scott (0-1) led most of the first quarter and was on top after the first eight minutes, 14-13.

But Drew Howerton scored his only 4 points of the night to spark Broken Arrow (2-0) at the beginning of the second quarter. BAHS held the Tigers without a field goal until the 2:05 mark as it took the lead and pushed it to 26-16.

Gary Floyd finally got Fort Scott's first field goal of the period but Broken Arrow scored the last 7 of the period to go into the locker room ahead 33-18.

Joe Toupal led Broken Arrow with 22 points while Cameron Terry and Evan Drake each had 11. BAHS shot 47 percent from the field on 27 of 57 and outrebounded Fort Scott, 38-24.

No one got to double figures for the Tigers, who were led by Griffin Knopp's 9 points. Fort Scott shot 28 percent on 11 of 40 field-goal shooting and made just 5 of 27 shots over the final three quarters.

NOTES -- Broken Arrow's teams opened the season Tuesday against Lawton (Okla.). The boys won 62-30 as Toupal and Howerton scored 15 points each. The girls lost 54-38 as only four girls scored led by Santiago's 16 points. Dennis added 12 points for the Tigers....
