Johnson says he's out as HR director

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
The saga surrounding the future of the Fort Scott director of human resources position may be coming to a conclusion soon.

Despite Fort Scott City Manager Joe Turner's statement that a decision has not been made, current Fort Scott Director of Human Resources Robert Johnson seems to think otherwise.

"(A decision) should be coming pretty soon," Turner said. Turner added that a decision could come early next week.

Although Turner said no decision has been made, he did say no official documents have been signed.

The Tribune received an e-mail Wednesday from Johnson which appears to indicate that the decision has been made. Johnson wrote in the e-mail that he will be leaving the city effective Nov. 27 and that a reception will be held Nov. 25 to celebrate his more than 16 years of service.

The e-mail reads:

"The city commission has elected to discontinue the Director of Human Resources position and I will be leaving the City effective November 27, 2009. The Fort Scott Police Department is hosting a reception for me on November 25, 2009, from 3 to 5 at the Fort Scott Safety Facility 1604 S. National. My time at the City, 16 1/2 years, has been rewarding and exciting with several accomplishments that could only happened when people work together with a common cause. I have been able to work with and for some very good people while at the City. It has been my pleasure to represent the City and it's employees during this time and will take some great memories of the things we accomplished with me. At this time, I do not know who will be handling the hr duties at the City and would ask that you contact Joe Turner, City Manager, should you need a contact person.

I would like to personally thank everyone who provided me with your encouragement, support and friendship over the years."

Turner responded to the news of the e-mail by saying, "Everything has not been completely finalized yet."

The Tribune attempted to make contact with Johnson regarding the e-mail, however he was unavailable for comment.

The future of the human resources director position was put in jeopardy when the Fort Scott City Commission voted 3-2 to instruct Fort Scott City Manager Joe Turner to eliminate the position during the Sept. 15 meeting of the commission. The commissioners cited the city's budget as the reason for the proposed cut.

I think our city "commession" (misspelling intentional) has really messed up this time. Bob has given many years of service to the city and now they throw him away. The frustrating part of this is that I know that there are several other jobs in this city that can be cut, and needs to be started at City Hall.

I can't see the discussion here. He was voted out by men with the authority to do so. I also thought he was listed as one of the people being investigated by the grand jury, where did that go?Lots of people don't like Johnson, he's arrogant and rude, and has always acted as though he ran the city.As for being interim police chief, when we're looking for a new one, what kind of training did he have? Running around at Good Olde Days with his black t-shirt with police emblazoned in large white letters {while citizens smirked} making sure his gun was strapped on so it could be seen. Is there some big list he has about how wonderful Fort Scott has been improved directly from his efforts. Towns move ahead, cities change. I say good luck wherever you go, soon as you give up trying to hang on to the job.How nice it will be to go to City Hall and see people smiling again. To ask to speak to someone and not dread knowing Johnson will appear, when you've clearly asked to speak to the correct person you need to deal with. Good for you commissioners, that's why we chose you.

SO long Bob its been good.

I know that the three people that the public works director laid off were the least paid employees now I think that the city administration should take a pay cut of at least 15% due to these hard times I mean here we have a city manager making 7000.00 a month and reading his response to the e-mail, he don't know whats going on so I dont think he'll miss it
