Texas championship also features re-match

Thursday, November 12, 2009

CORSICANA, Texas -- Two weeks ago, No. 1 Blinn faced No. 2 Navarro here for the regular-season Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship.

Sunday at 3 p.m., those teams will meet here once again. This time, it's for the SWJCFC playoffs championship and Navarro is the No. 1-ranked team in the country.

The Bulldogs (10-0) held off a fourth-quarter rally and prevailed on Oct. 31 by a 23-20 score. In the next NJCAA/jcfootball.com poll, Navarro was the new No. 1 while Blinn (9-1) fell to No. 4.

Blinn moved up one spot in this week's poll to No. 3. Former No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast lost to East Mississippi by the incredible score of 75-71 in the Mississippi championship game while Blinn defeated No. 14 Tyler, 21-15, in the SWJCFC's first round.

Sunday's contest will also be a rematch of last year's SWJCFC Championship Game. Navarro won the regular-season title and was 10-0 going into that game. But Blinn, which was the third seed in the playoffs after a tie-breaker, routed Navarro, 49-24, in the championship game. Blinn went on to lose to Fort Scott in the Heart of Texas Bowl while Navarro was unable to go to a bowl game as there were not enough post-season slots available.
