Students to take the stage with 'Wizard of Oz'

Saturday, November 7, 2009
Nevada, Mo. -- The Nevada High School Fine Arts Department entertains audiences of all ages with its upcoming production of "Wizard of Oz." Performances are at 7 p.m. on November 19, 20, and 21 in the NHS Auditorium.

Nearly 50 students bring to life the musical based on L. Frank Baum's original novel and MGM's 1939 motion picture with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg.

"There are two different versions of this musical and we chose to perform the RSC version of 'Wizard of Oz' as it closely matches the film version that we are all so familiar with. It has all the elements audiences love from the yellow brick road and ruby slippers to Toto and the tornado," Director Angie Bin said.

Students take on the recognizable roles of "Wizard of Oz" including seniors Rachel Pinci as Dorothy, Kaleb Claypool as Lion, performance newcomer Bret Gomez as Tinman, and junior Scott Hampton as Scarecrow.

"Having to take on the roll of Scarecrow has been both a terrifying, yet invigorating experience for me," Hampton said. "Being able to enjoy the play as well as being around my friends has made it all worthwhile." Junior Aaron Jenkins makes his stage debut as the Wizard of Oz, senior Erica Magsam is Glinda the Good Witch, and freshman Krista Dipman takes on the Wicked Witch of the West. The production staff includes Music Director Wes Morton, Assistant Director Bobbie Lou Barber, Accompanist Marsha Hooper, and Band Director Bill Martin.

"This production showcases a wide range of student talents and the performers range from eighth graders to seniors," Bin said. "Audiences will see student led choreography, set designs, makeup and hairstyles, and prop designs."

"The 'Wizard of Oz' has been a lot of work. Memorizing lines, learning notes, and sweating profusely in a lion costume, are but a few things cast members have to endure in this musical," Claypool said.

Cast members take a performance tour of local schools on November 17 to give children a sneak preview of the show.

Adult tickets are $6 and children and students are $3 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 and seating is first come, first served. Tickets are available at the NHS office, 800 W. Hickory, Nevada or at the door.
