BREAKING NEWS: No. 3 Fort Scott 14, No. 4 Butler 10 (Final)

Saturday, October 31, 2009
(Edited at 1:05 a.m. Monday morning to clarify the Texas playoff picture)

Fort Scott Community College quarterback Dominque Davis scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 1:37 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Greyhounds their first Jayhawk Conference championship since 1974 with a 14-10 victory over Butler at Frary Field Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds came into the contest ranked No. 3 in the national poll while Butler was No. 4. Fort Scott will host Hutchinson in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs at 1:30 Nov. 8. The Blue Dragons (6-3) blasted Garden City, 55-14, Saturday night to claim the fourth and final Region VI playoff spot.

The Greyhounds (7-0 Jayhawk, 9-0 overall) took possession at their own 8 with 8:15 remaining and were pushed back to the four on a holding penalty on the first play of the drive. 17 plays and 94 yards later, Davis scored the game-winer.

Davis' touchdown was set up by a 23-yard pass from Davis to Zach McFall on a third-and-19 play from the Fort Scott 25 just two plays before.

Butler fell to 6-1, 7-2 with the loss. It was Fort Scott's first victory over Butler since the 1986 playoffs and first in the regular season since 1978. The Grizzlies had won 36 of the 38 match-ups since then (36-1-1).

Butler will host Coffeyville in Sunday's other first-round contest.

Also Saturday, No. 2 Navarro used home-field advantage to claim the regular-season championship of the Southwest Junior College Football Conference as the Bulldogs (9-0) held off No. 1 Blinn, 23-20. Navarro held a 23-7 lead with 14 1/2 minutes left in the contest, which featured 916 yards of total offense and 250 yards in penalties. Blinn finished the regular season at 8-1.

The SWJFC playoffs begin Saturday with No. 3-seed Tyler traveling to Blinn while Navarro hosts fourth-seeded Kilgore. Kilgore had the inside track on that spot going into Saturday's play.

More details about the game will be provided in Tuesday's edition.
