'Hounds soar over Air Force Prep

Monday, October 26, 2009

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Fort Scott Community College, ranked third in the latest NJCAA/ jcfootball. com football poll, used a pair of 200-yard rushing efforts to defeat Air Force Prep, 48-28, at Falcon Stadium here Friday.

The Greyhounds' victory sets up the highly-anticipated battle for the Jayhawk Conference regular season Championship when Fort Scott (6-0 Jayhawk, 8-0 overall) plays host to No. 4-ranked Butler County (5-0, 7-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frary Field.

Butler did its part to make sure the anticipated match up did not lose any luster by blasting winless Highland 54-3 Saturday. Butler's only blemish on its 2009 record came in Week One when the Grizzlies lost to current No. 1 Blinn (Texas), 24-17.

There will be many activities prior to the game on Saturday, a list of which will be released later in the week.

Incidentally, Blinn and Navarro set up their No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up that will take place this Saturday in Corsicana, Texas. No. 2 Blinn (8-0) demolished Cisco, 84-13, Saturday while No. 1 Navarro (also 8-0) defeated Arkansas Baptist, 24-6, in Little Rock on Thursday.

Fort Scot overpowered the smaller Huskies (5-3) on the line of scrimmage to tally up 499 yards rushing and 545 total offense.

Jasmin Hopkins and Justin Woods ran for 234 yards and 225 yards respectively. Hopkins had 3 rushing touchdowns while Woods rushed for 2 scores. It was the third career 200-yard rushing game for Hopkins in his FSCC career, all of which have come this season. His personal high was the 282-yard effort he had in a victory at Garden City on Sept. 19. Only Chris Brown, currently with the NFL's Houston Texans, has had as many 200-yard games in a Greyhound uniform in the last 20 years.

With his 234 yards, Hopkins moved to fourth place on the FSCC's all-time rushing list and only needs four yards to overtake the third spot.

The Greyhounds scored the first 14 points of the game with only four minutes going off of the scoreboard. Woods scored on a 3-yard run, then Hopkins ran 77 yards later in the period. Luke Halsey two successful PAT kicks made it 14-0 with 11:24 left in the first quarter.

Air Force Prep scored its first touchdown with 12:14 left in the second quarter on an 8-yard run from quarterback Zerick Rollins to cut the FSCC lead to 14-7.

Fort Scott answered this Husky with Woods' 3-yard run with 6:16 to go that capped a 19-play, 73-yard drive. Halsey added the PAT to make the score 21-7.

Under two minutes later, the Hounds defense came up big with a fumble recovery. Defensive lineman Byron Jerideau stripped the ball from an Air Force Prep running back and ran 75 yards to the FSCC's 1-yard line. Quarterback Dominique Davis punched it in from there on the next play to make the score 28-7 at the half.

Air Force Prep, having shown a great deal of improvement versus Jayhawk Conference competition the past two seasons, came out of the locker room and immediately cut into the Fort Scott lead. They scored on two runs in the period, the first an 1-yard run by Ollis with 10:38 left in the period. The second was a 15-yard run by Young with 3:02 to go.

Hopkins scored his second touchdown of the day with 7:03 minutes left in the game, running in from 3 yards out. Halsey's PAT kick hit the goal post and bounced away no good, his first miss of the season in 37 attempts, but the lead grew to 34-21.

Greyhound defensive back Steven Ford intercepted a Rollins pass at the Greyhounds 20 yard line to set up Fort Scott's next scoring drive. The 'Hounds marched 80 yards in just six plays with Davis scoring on another 1-yard run. Back-up quarterback Spenser Bennett, holding for Halsey, took the snap and threw to tight end Josh Baker for a successful two-point conversion that made it 42-28 with 2:51 minutes left in the contest.

AFP took only 44 seconds to score again as Rollins threw a 13-yard pass to Anthony Daniels to cut the lead down to 42-28.

Fort Scott capped the day with a 3-yard score from Hopkins with no time left on the clock. Because the conversion would not affect the outcome, it was not attempted.

Defensively, the 'Hounds forced the Huskies into 5 turnovers and had 4 sacks. Sophomore linebacker LaVonte David led the 'Hounds in tackles with 11 total tackles and 2 tackles for loss. Jerideau and Anthony White both had 10 tackles with 4 behind the line of scrimmage. Both linemen each had a sack. Topeka sophomore defensive end Zach Bowers had 2 sacks for 23 yards lost. Defensive back Jamel Johnson had 8 tackles to go along with 2 forced fumbles.

NOTES -- Although records are somewhat incomplete, it appears certain that this is the first time in FSCC history that two running backs have gained 200 yards in the same game. In the last 20 seasons, there isn't even a record of two 100-yard rushers in the same contest....

Fort Scott had over 400 yards rushing for the second time this season and over 500 total for the third time. The 'Hounds rushed for 415 yards at Garden City. They had 501 total yards at Garden and 502 total last week versus Highland....

Blinn is No. 1. Navarro is No. 2. You have it backwards. Blinn has been No. 1 since beating Butler in the first game of the season.
