FSCC will celebrate the college's 90th anniversary during an all-school and alumni tailgate party prior to the FSCC football game on Saturday. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m., and kickoff for the game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
According to a statement from FSCC, classes began for the first time at the college on Sept. 8, 1919, with an enrollment of 17 students. FSCC was created to offer graduates of Fort Scott High School and other surrounding high schools the chance to achieve two years of college education for a low cost and without having to go far from home.
FSCC is recognized as the oldest continuing community college in Kansas. FSCC separated from the local high school and moved to the present campus in 1967.
The FSCC football team played its first game versus Iola on Oct. 12, 1923. The team's first win came on Nov. 7, 1925 with a 13-0 win over Ozark Wesleyans of Carthage, Mo., the FSCC statement said.
The FSCC team won the NJCAA national championship in 1970, completing an 11-0 season with a 41-20 win over Mesa, Ariz., in the national championship game.
