CHANUTE -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team swept Chanute and Iola here Thursday night while Pittsburg was upset by Parsons at Altamont. Those results gave the Tigers at least a share of the Southeast Kansas League championship.
Chanute was unbeaten in league play going into the night at 4-0. Fort Scott was 5-1 and Pittsburg was 3-1. The teams had played different numbers of matches was due to the fact that a league triangular at Chanute involving Pittsburg and Coffeyville on Oct. 1 was postponed when Chanute High School suffered a flu outbreak that sent over 200 students home. That triangular will be made up Monday.
The Tigers beat Iola two games to none, although game scores were not available at press time. Fort Scott then beat Chanute, 25-23, 25-18. This put Fort Scott at 7-1 in the league (20-11 overall) with its SEK schedule now complete. Meanwhile, Chanute went on to beat Iola, 25-16, 25-13. The Blue Comets stand at 5-1, 21-11 with the make-up triangular to go.
Meanwhile, at Altamont, Parsons upset Pittsburg, 25-27, 25-23, 25-23, giving the Purple Dragons their second league defeat. The result of the Pittsburg-Labette County match was not known at press time but without it, the Dragons are 3-2, 19-7.
Should Chanute lose either of its two matches Monday night, Fort Scott will be the league champion outright.
Details of Fort Scott's matches will be printed in the Weekend Herald-Tribune this Saturday.
