A sinkhole has been formed by water eroding a tunnel underground at Gunn Park between shelter houses Nos. 6 and 7. Due to the danger of further water erosion, no traffic will be permitted in this area of the park until further notice.

The Fort Scott Public Works Department has closed a section of Gunn Park Wednesday by shelter houses No. 6 and No. 7 and by the old golf course. According to Public Works Director Eric Bailey, the closure is a result of recent damage caused by water tunneling under the ground causing a large hole in the ground with the danger of more collapsing. Bailey said engineers are in the process of determining how to fix the damage. The damage is believed to be caused by the abundance of rain recently received, according to the city. It will be closed until further notice and no traffic will be permitted there until repairs can be made.
In addition, First Street between Cameron and Franklin streets have been closed. This closure is a result of deterioration of a wall beneath the bridge and will be closed until further notice. Bailey said it has not been determined how the bridge will be fixed.
