Top 7 the same; Coffeyville enters at No. 19

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

The top seven teams in the NJCAA/jcfootball.com national poll remained in the same places as last week and none of the top 12 teams fell more than one spot in the poll released Tuesday.

Blinn (Texas) received all seven first-place votes for the second week in a row and now enjoys its sixth consecutive week at No. 1. The Buccaneers are followed by Navarro (Texas) at No. 2, Fort Scott No. 3, Butler fourth, Arizona Western fifth, Mississippi Gulf Coast sixth and Snow in the seventh spot.

Blinn and Navarro won in routs. The Buccaneers blasted former No. 18 Trinity Valley, 63-29, handing the Cardinals their third consecutive defeat. Navarro blew out Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, 59-14.

Fort Scott stayed at No. 3 with a 21-0 victory over winless Dodge City. Butler had last week off. Arizona Western was also idle.

Mississippi Gulf Coast pounded East Central Mississippi, 49-19, while Snow had a tough game with Pima (Ariz.) before coming away with a 21-13 victory.

The only change in the top 12 is just to break a tie. Last week Grand Rapids (Mich.) and Dean (Mass.) were tied at No. 8. This week, coming off a more impressive 51-7 win over Joliet (Ill.), Grand Rapids is at No. 8 by itself while Dean is no No. 9 after beating the Yale junior varsity 35-0.

Remaining at No. 10 is East Mississippi followed by Rochester Tech (Minn.) and Eastern Arizona.

There's quite a bit of shakeup in the remaining seven positions as four teams dropped out of the poll. Amazingly, one of them is not Hutchinson, which lost its third consecutive game. Even after losing in overtime to unranked Coffeyville and falling to 3-3, the Blue Dragons managed to stay in the poll at No. 20, which is a drop of seven spots.

Coffeyville, meanwhile, moved into the poll at No. 19. Were it not for Hutch's .500 mark, the Red Ravens' 4-3 record would be the worst of the ranked teams.

Ellsworth (Iowa) moved up two spots to No. 13. Central Lakes (Minn.) also jumped two spots to No. 14. Lackawanna (Pa.) is also up two to No. 15.

The next four teams are new to the poll: Jones County (Miss.) at No. 16, Iowa Central 17, Louisburg, N.C. 18 and Coffeyville.

Dropping out were former No. 14 Georgia Military, which lost to the University of South Alabama junior varsity by 27 points despite having a bye week to prepare, No. 18 Trinity Valley, which didn't even get any votes this week, No. 19 Phoenix and No. 20 Pearl River, Miss.

This week's schedule for the top five teams has Blinn traveling to NEO (3-3), Navarro visiting Cisco (1-5), which gave Trinity Valley the first loss of its three-game skid, Fort Scott hosting Highland (0-6) and Butler at home against Independence (2-4).

Coffeyville has a bye and doesn't play again until going to Dodge City (0-6) on Oct. 24. Hutchinson has a game that is by no means an easy one as Air Force Prep (5-2) visits. The Huskies are 4-2 against the Jayhawk Conference this season with the losses coming to Butler and Coffeyville on the road. AFP routed a short-handed Independence team last week, 36-9. Its four victories against the Jayhawk Conference have come by an average of 22 points.
