Helen Evangeline Fulton, 94, of Fort Scott, died Wednesday evening Sept. 23, 2009 at the Fort Scott Medicalodge.

She was born Dec. 22, 1914 near Yates Center, Kan., the daughter of Harold and Elva (Powers) McLaughlin.

She married Claude A. Fulton on Aug. 22, 1946 in Fort Scott, Kan. He preceded her in death Dec. 25, 1997.

Helen attended Blue Mound school and graduated from Pittsburg State University.

She started her teaching career in Pawnee in country schools, and then taught at the Main Street School in Fort Scott. She taught third grade at Eugene Ware Elementary for 42 years, and retired in May of 1980.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years, and the American Baptist Women's Ministries. She was also a member of the Fort Scott National Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Retired Teachers Association.

She liked to visit with friends and family, and she knitted and crocheted many beautiful items.

Helen is survived by three great nieces; Nancy Beth Jennings of Frankfort, Ky., Kim Vincent and family of New Zealand, and Doreen Lockwood and family of Ariz., a great nephew; Glen Surles and wife Trish, her friend Mary Jane Kennedy of Kansas City, Kan., care givers Darrell and Rowena Thompson of Fort Scott, Kan., and many other close friends.

Pastor Tim Davish will conduct funeral services 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, with burial following at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation is Sunday evening, Sept. 27, 2009 from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Fort Scott, or Hospice Compassus, and left in the care of the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, P.O. Box 309, Fort Scott, Kan., 66701.
