Verda F. McGehee, age 68, resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died early Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2009, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo.

She was born Aug. 4, 1941, in Wichita, Kan., the daughter of Roy Dyas and Esther Bowers Dyas.

Verda married Orville H. McGehee on Oct. 6, 1967, at Wichita. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2005.

She had worked for several years as an aide at Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Garland, Kan.

Verda enjoyed working crafts and crocheting. She had volunteered time at the Homestead Craft Store and later set up craft booths and the Good Ol' Days and area craft shows.

Survivors include five sons, Carl Cotton, Garland, Kan., Ronnie McGehee and wife, Kathy, Fort Scott, Bret Cotton, Riverside, Calif., Edward Bushey, Arcadia, Kan., and Wayne McGehee, Minneapolis, Kan.; two daughters, Vonda Kay Ngigi and husband, Daniel, Olathe, Kan.; and Patricia Ann West, Neosho, Mo.

Also surviving are a brother, Bud Dyas, Wichita; two sisters, Ruby Bowman, Wichita and Mary Lee Melvin, Newton, Kan.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sons, Melvin McGehee, Eddie McGehee and Orville McGehee, Jr.; three daughters, Peggy Carpenter and Ida and Idelle Bushey as well as a sister, Peggy Hannah.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel.

Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
