Bulldogs control play in 4-1 victory over Tigers

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

Independence controlled play most of the game at Ellis Park Tuesday afternoon as the Bulldogs rolled to a 4-1 victory over Fort Scott High School's soccer team in the Tigers' home opener.

The Bulldogs (1-0 Southeast Kansas League, 1-1 overall) took 36 shots at the Tigers' goal while Fort Scott (0-1, 0-2) mustered only four in the game and one in the second half, although that did result in the Tigers' lone goal, a hard charge by Chris McAllister in the final minute of play.

On a wet, but not sloppy surface, Independence began to take control after the first 10 minutes. Up until that point, Fort Scott had managed to push into the Indy half a few times.

Marcus Wright scored the first and last goals for the Bulldogs. The first came midway through the first half. The second came in the 62nd minute. Mason Posch and Bry Thomas also scored goals for Independence.

Fort Scott's next game is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Pittsburg for another Southeast Kansas League match.

NOTES -- Independence's season began Monday at a tournament in McPherson, where they lost to Hays, 1-0, in a shootout. The Bulldogs will end up playing four games this week as they go back to McPherson Thursday and Saturday....

Thursday's game will be Pittsburg's season opener. The Purple Dragons will be the last SEK team to get its season underway. Coffeyville opened its season Tuesday against Wichita West....
