A 75-yard scoring pass from transfer quarterback Dominque Davis to freshman receiver Malcom Moulton with just under 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the contest gave No. 15 Fort Scott Community College a 21-17 victory over visiting Kilgore (Texas) at Frary Field Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhounds trailed 10-0 after 3 1/2 minutes of the second quarter and were still down 17-7 at halftime. They won even though game stats show they held the ball for only 14:12 of possession time, had eight fewer first downs and had 50 yards less total offense in 16 fewer plays.

Davis, a transfer from Boston College, completed 6 of 10 passes for 81 yards, meaning that almost all of his passing yards came on that last scoring play. However, the Greyhound running game managed 156 yards -- mearly 50 more than the visiting Rangers -- as Shawnee sophomore Justin Woods gained 150 yards on 21 carries in his first action as a 'Hound.

Kilgore opened the game with a 13-play, 62-yard that culminated in a 25-yard field goal by David Bailey with 8:26 to go in the period.

Fort Scott didn't have the ball for long before punting it away and Kilgore ate a lot of time before running back Dominique Wilkins' 3-yard touchdown plunge with 9:48 before the half, coming at the end of a 16-play, 91-yard drive.

Fort Scott answered that touchdown by driving 79 yards in seven plays with Woods scoring from 25 yards out with 7:43 left in the half to cut the deficit to 14-7.

Kilgore answered when quarterback Chase Fisher scored on a 1-yard dive to make the score 17-7 with 27 seconds left in the half. Third down conversions in the first half were the key for Kilgore, as the Rangers converted five times.

Fort Scott's first possession of the second half resulted in a Jasmin Hopkins rushing touchdown from 2 yards out. Luke Halsey's PAT made it 17-14 with 11:18 left in the third quarter.

That capped the scoring until Davis' six-yard slant pass was hauled in by Moulton and the Atlanta, Ga., product covered the final 69 yards himself for what would hold up as the winning score.

Kilgore had the ball one last time, moving inside the 25-yard line but no further as time ran out before turning the ball over on downs

The Greyhound defense held Kilgore to minus-17 yards on the first four possessions of the second half, according to FSCC statistics. Steven Ford, a freshman defensive back from Charleston, S.C., led the defense with nine tackles. Sophomore linebacker Lavonte Davis and freshman defensive back Jamel Johnson each had eight tackles. Zacharia Bowers and Andre Clark each had one quarterback sack for eight yards.

Moulton and Fondren had two receptions each to lead FSCC on offense. Kilgore used two quarterbacks with Fisher completing 13 of 18 passes for 163 yards. Darius Perkins hauled in 7 catches for 83 yards.

The Greyhounds begin Jayhawk Conference play at 7 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Coffeyville.
