Fort Scott 12's win district
OSAWATOMIE -- Fort Scott's 12-year-old Cal Ripken baseball team was already going to be in the State Tournament, which will be held next weekend at Don Hewett Field, as the host team. So they didn't have to play in the District 6 Tournament held here this week.
But as long as they were going to enter the District tourney, they apparently decided they might as well go ahead and win the thing. And that's what they did in beating Osawatomie, 17-12, Wednesday night.
Fort Scott went unbeaten in the tournament but Osawatomie will also qualify for State, taking the spot that the District 6 champion was going to fill had it not been Fort Scott.
Mason Knopp was named Fort Scott's MVP in the championship game while Issac Thurston was given the WOW Award, which goes to a player who makes an outstanding play.
The Fort Scott team advanced to the final by beating Osawatomie Tuesday night, 8-4. Joe Doherty was named MVP and John Hughes won the WOW Award. Olpe eliminated Emporia from the tournament later that night by a 10-4 score.
Osawatomie beat Olpe, 15-6, in Wednesday's first game before playing Fort Scott for the championship.
The 12-year-olds are the third Fort Scott Cal Ripken team to win a District title this summer. The 9-year-old Cal Ripken team began pool play at the State Tournament in Lakin Thursday afternoon with a noon game against Paola. The 10-year-olds start today at 4 p.m. at Wellington with a first-round game against Cimarron River. The 10-year-old tourney is double-elimination.
The 11-year-old team defeated Emporia, 7-3, Thursday night at Osawatomie and advanced to State at Liberal next week.
