Pair of Fort Scott teams advance to Ripken State

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Fort Scott's 9-year-old and 10-year-old Cal Ripken Baseball teams have both advanced to State tournaments this weekend after winning district tournaments at Don Hewitt Field last week.

Both teams came from the loser's bracket in order to advance.

The 9-year-olds will go to Lakin and play their first game Thursday at noon against Paola. The 10-year-olds are on their way to Wellington. They play their first game at 4 p.m. Friday. Both tournaments will conclude Monday.

In addition to those teams, Fort Scott's 11-year-old team is currently playing a Cal Ripken district tournament at Osawatomie and the 12-year-olds will be the host of a Cal Ripken State tournament next week.

Cal Ripken baseball is part of the Babe Ruth organization.

9-year-old District:

The 9-year-olds won their first game by a 15-1 score over Linn County July 7. Colby Seested was Fort Scott's MVP in that game and Gunnar Brown won the WOW Award, given to a player who makes an outstanding play. In the day's other game, Emporia defeated Osawatomie, 15-3.

On July 8, Emporia beat Fort Scott, 2-1, and Osawatomie eliminated Linn County, 13-6. Trey Holston was the MVP for Fort Scott in its game while Daniel Eichenberger won the WOW Award.

Fort Scott stayed alive by beating Osawatomie, 18-6, in the first game Thursday. Luke Karleskint was MVP and Jesse Jones won the WOW Award. Fort Scott played a rematch against Emporia right after that and won 15-10 to force a winner-take-all contest Friday. Jeron Poyner was the MVP for Fort Scott and Trey Holston won the WOW Award.

In the final game Friday, Fort Scott defeated Emporia, 11-5. Poyner and Lute Karleskint were co-MVPs and Hudson Horn won the WOW Award.

10-year-old District:

Fort Scott's 10-year-old team won its first game, 15-4, over Osawatomie on July 7. In the first game, Linn County beat Emporia, 15-5. Fort Scott's MVP was Grant Goldston while the WOW winner was Brady Tourtillott.

Linn County defeated Fort Scott, 12-9, in the first game on July 8. Jacob Gannon was MVP for Fort Scott while Gage Lopp won the WOW Award. Osawatomie eliminated Emporia, 22-20.

Thursday, Fort Scott beat Osawatomie, 14-10, with Jarrett Lyons winning the MVP and Gannon the WOW Award. With Osawatomie eliminated, Fort Scott faced Linn County again and won 9-3 to force a deciding game on Friday. Taylor Engstrom was the MVP and Gannon won the WOW Award.

Friday, Fort Scott shut out Linn County, 6-0, to advance to State. Goldston and Gannon were co-MVPs and Austin Cook won the WOW Award.

11-year-old District:

Monday was the first day of action at Osawatomie and Fort Scott shut out the host team 15-0. Carter Young was the MVP for Fort Scott and Jacob Bradbury won the WOW Award. In Monday's other game, Emporia defeated Linn County, 13-10.

Fort Scott played Emporia Tuesday in a winner's bracket game. The winner advances directly into the championship game. Tuesday's other game has Linn County facing Osawatomie with the loser eliminated.

The loser's bracket final and championship game are set for Wednesday. If the loser's bracket team win the second game, another game will be played Thursday.

12-year-old District:

Although Fort Scott's team is an automatic qualifier as the State Tournament host, it has elected to participate in the District Tournament at Osawatomie. Play began Monday with Fort Scott taking an 11-3 win over Emporia and Osawatomie defeating Olpe, 10-7. Fort Scott's MVP was Wyatt Reehl with the WOW Award winner listed as J. Smith.

Fort Scott plays Osawatomie tonight with the winner going on to the championship game. The loser drops into the losers' bracket. Emporia and Olpe play tonight with the winner playing the Fort Scott-Osawatomie loser Wednesday.

The losers' bracket final and championship games will be played Wednesday. If the losers' bracket team wins the championship game, another game will be played Thursday.

12-year-old State:

The unofficial start of the tournament will be held July 23 with a home run derby at 7 p.m. Play begins July 24 at noon with the first of four first-round games. Fort Scott's team, regardless of where it finishes at District, will face the District 5 champion at 7 p.m. The District 6 champion -- or runner-up should Fort Scott win the District Tournament -- will play the District 4 champion at 2 p.m.

There will be six games held July 25 starting at 9 a.m. Three games are scheduled for July 26. The championship is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 27. If the losers' bracket team wins that game, a second game would immediately follow.

The Kansas State champion advances to the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament at Grand Island, Neb., which will be held Aug. 1-5.
