An Arcadia man was killed in a three-vehicle accident Thursday evening about five miles south of Fort Scott on U.S. Highway 69.

According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Charles Pfaff, 72, of Arcadia, died just before 7 p.m. Thursday after being transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center for injuries he suffered in the accident.

Pfaff, who was driving a 1996 Chevrolet S10 pickup northbound on U.S. 69, was struck head-on by a 2008 Hyundai Elantra that had veered left of center as it was traveling south on U.S. 69. The Elantra was driven by Christopher Budden of Alton, Iowa. A third vehicle, a 2008 Mazda CX-7, which was also traveling north on U.S. 69, struck the vehicle Pfaff was driving from behind. All three vehicles came to a rest.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Pfaff was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the KHP report.

Stacy Michelle McIntosh, 32, and James Allen McIntosh, 35, of Dallas, Texas, occupants of the Mazda, were both listed on the KHP report as having possible injuries. A third occupant in the Mazda, 11-month-old Emma McIntosh, also of Dallas, was also listed as having possible injuries. All three were wearing safety restraints at the time of the accident, the KHP report said.

Budden, 33, who was also wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, was transported to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. A passenger in the Elantra, Lizbeth Reyes, 29, Orange City, Iowa, was also taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center. She was also wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident, the report said. No information was available on their condition as of press time.

All three vehicles were towed from the scene. The Fort Scott Police Department and other area first responders assisted KHP following the accident.

No further details on the accident were available as of press time.
