Fort Scott City Commissioners approved the resurfacing of several alleys during the June 16 meeting.

According to Fort Scott Public Works Director Eric Bailey, seven of the nine alley were approved by the last commission however the project was never completed due to time and budget restrictions.

The alley included in the project are:

* From 6th Street to 7th Street between National Avenue and Main Street

* From 1st Street to 2nd Street between Main and Scott streets

* From 5th Street to 6th Street between National Avenue and Judson Street

* From 7th Street to 8th Street between National Avenue and Main Street

* From 8th Street to 9th Street between National Avenue and Main Street

* From 9th Street to 10th Street between National Avenue and Main Street

* From Wall Street to Oak Street between National Avenue and Judson Street

* From Wall Street to 1st Street between Crawford and Judson streets

* From Oak Street to Pine Street between National Avenue and Judson Street

The total cost of the project, according to Bailey, will be approximately $44,000 at the worst. He said they city will be getting the asphalt from Bourbon County and should be able to get the price lowered by using the rock and sand that remains from the city's asphalt plant. Fort Scott City Manager Joe Turner said the money for the project will come out of the $100,000 which is budgeted annually for street improvements.

Turner said he hopes to have the project completed by the beginning of November. He added, he expects the project to begin in September.

I was driving through town this afternoon, dodging pot holes & thought about how poor some of our streets look. There are actually places in Horton where the grass is growing in the cracks in the middle of the road. It's a shame we're letting our streets go in order to fix alleys. They're not intended to be for through traffic, only to allow access to the rear of properties. Is this really making good use of our street funds?
