Joyce Madrene Johnson, 70, of Overland Park, Kan., went to be with our Lord, Monday, May 4, 2009, at Menorah Medical Center due to a brief illness resulting from pneumonia and a blood clot in her heart.
Services were held May 6, 2009, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
She was layed to rest at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery with her loving husband.
Joyce was born Dec. 4, 1938 in Fort Scott, Kan., the daughter of Ivan Louis and Alice Faye (Embry) Smith.
She graduated from from Fort Scott Senior High.
She married Charles Johnson in the late 60's. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1990.
Also preceding her in death were her parents, Ivan and Faye Smith, three brothers: Donald L Smith, Neil B. Smith, Harold E. Smith and one sister, Rosalie F. Cox.
Joyce is survived by her siblings: Bill Smith and wife Linda of Twain Harte, Ca., Gary Smith and wife Wanda of Austin, Texas; and one sister, Janice Pent, of Overland Park, Kan.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Joyce kept in contact and remained close friends with several of her grade school and high school friends, and had several close friends of 40+ years in and around the Kansas City area.
She lived most of her adult life in the Kansas City area and spent several years in El Paso, Texas. Joyce loved life, family, friends and traveling.
She opened her home to foreign exchange students for several years and was a mentor with Big Sisters in the greater Kansas City area.
Memorial contributions in her name can be made to the charity or church of the donator's choice.
