ONLINE FIRST: Severe weather headed toward Bourbon County

Wednesday, May 13, 2009
A tornado warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Springfield MO at 7:13 p.m.

NWS has issued the tornado warning for bourbon county until 8:30 p.m.

At 7:12 p.m., NWS doppler radar indicated a tornado near Moran or 21 miles southest of Mound City moving east at 30 m.p.h.

The tornado will be near:

Bronson by 7:20 p.m.

Uniontown by 7:30 p.m.

Redfield by 7:40 p.m.

Fort Scott by 7:55 p.m.

The towns of Xenia, Devon, Marmaton, and Hammond are also in the path of this tornadic storm.

In addition to a tornado, this storm is capable of producing large damaging hail up to golf ball size and destructive straight line winds in excess of 70 m.p.h.

Precautionary and preparedness actions:

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If no basement is available, seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.

If in a mobile home or vehicle, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter. If no shelter is available, lie flat in the nearest ditch or other low spot and cover your head with your hands.
