Garden City eliminates Greyhounds from Region VI

WICHITA -- The Fort Scott Community College baseball team was eliminated from the post-season here Monday. But it took each of the Jayhawk Conference's division winner to knock the Greyhounds out of the Region VI Tournament.

Eastern Division champion Cowley knocked Fort Scott down into the losers' bracket with a 7-1 victory in the first round on Saturday. Sunday, the 'Hounds bumped off Western Division runner-up Hutchinson, 3-2.

Monday morning, Western Division champ Garden City held off Fort Scott for 3-2 win that ended the Greyhounds' season with a record of 28-27.

Tournament play continues today with the losers' bracket final and the first championship game. If the losers' bracket winner wins both games today, another championship game will be played Wednesday night.

Saturday: (E1) Cowley 7, (E5) Fort Scott 1.

The Greyhounds' only run came from a home run by Tyler Zimmerman in the top of the first inning. Cowley (42-13) scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Adam Johnston had two hits for the Greyhounds. Cowley pitcher Zach Cargill held Fort Scott to eight hits, walked three and struck out two.

Tyler Spear (5-2) took the loss as he lasted only through the first two innings.

Sunday: (E5) Fort Scott 3, (W2) Hutchinson 2.

Fort Scott scored first when John Leek's second-inning single plated Johnston, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Hutchinson (29-24) tied the game in the sixth as Matt Williams brought in Trever Adams with a single. The Blue Dragons took the lead in the seventh when Adams' double down the left-field line scored Drew Wilkinson.

The 'Hounds tied it in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Barnes singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Brian Kalebaugh came in to pinch run and scored on a throwing error on Cruz's grounder to second.

Johnston doubled town the left-field line with two out in the eighth and gave the Greyhounds the lead for good, 3-2, on Higgins' single to center.

Johnston was two for four for Fort Scott while Barnes went two for three. Hutch's Scott Keffer went the distance in a losing effort, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out five.

Sean Felt pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Fort Scott, allowing one run on six hits while striking out six. Zach Juliano (4-3) went 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Mitch Albright registered his eighth save with a perfect ninth inning.

Monday: (W1) Garden City 3, (E5) Fort Scott 2.

The Broncbusters (45-16) scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, then held on although Fort Scott scored once in the eighth.

Garden City scored first in the bottom of the first as Cody Schramm was hit by a pitch, moved to second when C.J. Gilman walked and scored on Sloan Soulia's single.

Fort Scott tied the game in the fourth when Zach Higgins' sacrifice fly scored Kian Jost.

Wade Johnson's fifth-inning double scored M.J. Sartin and Andrew Phelan, putting the Busters up 3-1.

Cruz was hit by a pitch leading off the eighth for Fort Scott. Zimmerman switched places with him on a fielder's choice. Jason Houston and Jost hit back-to-back singles to bring Zimmerman home.

Houston got to third with two out in the inning but the 'Hounds couldn't bring him in.

Garden City closer heath Wyatt put Fort Scott down in order in the ninth to preserve the win for the Busters.

Houston and Jost were each two for four for the 'Hounds. Garden City's Erik Mattingly earned the win with eight innings of nine-hit work. He walked no one and struck out six.

Fort Scott used four pitchers, none of whom went more than three innings. Trace Green was pinned with the loss after he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in two innings.
