Bernelda Joan Mashek, 77, Richards, MO, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, MO., following a lengthy illness.
She was born on April 12, 1932, in Stuart, NE, to George Bolen and Fern Luella Cadwalder Bolen. She married James John Mashek on March 22, 1952, in O'Neill, NE, and he survives of the home.
Bernelda graduated from Stuart High School in Stuart, NE.
She taught school in Nebraska for two years. She and James moved to Richards, MO, in 1952, where they have lived ever since. Bernelda worked more than 10 years at Western Insurance Company in Ft. Scott, KS, until her retirement when she retired to the farm.
She later worked for New Generations in Ft. Scott for two years as a cook for 80 children who called her Grandma "B". She enjoyed crocheting and taking care of her family.
In addition to her husband James, survivors include two sons, Kim Mashek and his wife Nancy, Richards, MO, and Lee Mashek and his wife Pat, Deerfield, MO; two daughters, Susan Mashek, Ft. Scott, KS, and Jeanne Brewer, Mt. Vernon, MO; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Karen Mann, Pleasanton, KS, and Velma Synovek, Amoret, MO; two brothers, Randy Bolen, Pleasanton, KS, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Beverly Fairbanks.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Richland Cemetery in Richards, MO, with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Friends may call now and until 9 a.m. on Saturday at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, MO.
