"Our city is just a part of the national movement," Gayle Sackett said to the crowd of people that assembled in front of Fort Scott Memorial Hall on Wednesday afternoon. "On this day, more than 2,030 cities nationwide are having a rally. We are but a small part with just as important of a message -- 'Stop runaway spending and taxation without representation.'"
At the TEA Party on Wednesday, Sackett, who is the event's co-organizer, told the group the local event was organized to give them an opportunity to let their voices be heard. In addition, the meeting was a good time for residents to network among like-minded individuals, who think they have been "Taxed Enough Already," Sackett said.
Among the group of people assembled on the steps of Memorial Hall, was Sen. Bob Marshall, R-Fort Scott. Marshall said his attendance at the TEA Party was inspired by his desire to hear what people would like to see happen in government.
"I'm really here to listen to what the people have to say," Marshall said. "There are all kinds of interests (represented) here. Basically, I am here to listen and to see how well it is attended."
Another event attendee, Barbara Culbertson, Iola, said although she does not live in Fort Scott, she wanted to be a part of one of the rallies being conducted across the nation. Since she was working in Fort Scott, Culbertson said she decided to attend the local TEA Party. According to Culbertson, not only did the TEA Party give residents the opportunity to voice their opinions on taxation and wasteful government spending, but hopefully it also helped educate those who do not realize some of the actions the federal government has been taking.
"I think it will wake up a lot of people that don't pay attention to what's going on in the news," Culbertson said. "Maybe it will get more people to not just stand on the sidelines."
According to CNNMoney.com, the 2009 U.S. budget deficit is projected to reach $1.2 trillion. Fort Scott TEA Party co-organizer Jim Sackett explained to event attendees how much money the $1.2 trillion deficit equals.
"One trillion dollars would reach 68 thousand miles -- if it was just stacked on top of each other -- 68 thousand miles in the air," Sackett said. "If you started spending one million dollars a day from the time Jesus was born, you'd only have three fourths of a trillion dollars spent in 2,000 years ... and we're talking about a 1.2 trillion deficit."
Also at the event, Joe Ludlum, a representative of U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., told attendees their opinions were being heard in Washington.
"Congress Moran greatly respects and appreciates the efforts of the TEA Party movement," Ludlum said. "Collectively your voices are sending a clear powerful message to Washington D.C. and beyond. Congressman Moran sees the TEA Party movement has started a very important debate about the growth of government, the exorbitant amount of wasteful spending, and the need for serious comprehensive tax reform."
Ludlum added the methods used by congress to solve the current economic conditions are not adequate.
"Congress is attempting to solve the economic problems of today with a flawed strategy that involves expanding government and mortgaging our children and grandchildren with debt," Ludlum said. "This flawed strategy endangers our free-market system, a system that has provided the most dynamic economy in the history of the world."
Fort Scott Community College teacher Jeff Locke, who is a proponent of the Fair Tax, spoke to those assembled at the TEA Party about the need to implement the Fair Tax in Kansas, balancing the budget and getting rid of lobbyist, Locke said.
"It's supposed to be 'of the people, by the people, for the people' not 'of the paid lobbyist, by the paid lobbyist, for the paid lobbyist.'"
According to Locke Missouri has a Fair Tax resolution that it will be voting on in 2010. If Kansas doesn't develop a similar resolution, Kansas residents might begin moving to Missouri. Locke urged event participants to educate themselves about the Fair Tax.
"Man, when you edify yourself, you have the power and the knowledge to make change . . . balanced budget, the Fair Tax, keep the lobbyist out of the system," Locke said.
Local resident Jim Smith showed his support for the local TEA Party and encouraged event attendees to continue voicing their opinions. Smith said the more people voice their concerns about the issues they do not agree with, the more the government will take notice.
"This is a great thing," Smith said. "We have to keep doing it all the time."
Event attendees were not the only ones who showed support for the local TEA Party, as many vehicles that passed by during the rally honked their horns and cheered.
According to the Fox News Web site, www.foxnews.com, the TEA Party rallies are a part of a campaign to stop high taxation.
"The demonstrations are part of a larger grassroots movement against government spending called Taxed Enough Already, or TEA -- giving name to the Tax Day Tea Parties -- and come more than 235 years after the original Boston Tea Party revolt against taxes," the Fox News Web site said.

YES ~ OBAMA 2012 ~ YES
NO MORE "I'M THE DECIDER"
NO MORE "limbaugh-oriley-gingrich-hanity" HATE
You can smell the fear of Democrats. Yes, bring on 2012!!
It is very easy to "try" to discredit any opinions or movement that a person may disagree with. Expecially then their knowledge of what is happening is driven by the news media. This "movement" is not about party affiliation, politics or radicalism. It is simply about our government exceeding their authority and spending trillions we do not have. It is about "we the people" voicing our opinion. The news media is trying to make it a radical issue so they can discredit those attending. I simply do not understand why "agendas" take priority over the "truth".
"You can smell the fear of Democrats. Yes, bring on 2012!!"
We're gonna have to do a lot better than Bobby Jindal, John Boehner, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh if the comeback is coming that soon.
"Especially then their knowledge of what is happening is driven by the news media."
But this whole tea party thing was completely driven by the news media - the conservative side of it, that is.
Sure this was pushed by Fox News, but in reality this is a large number of citizens across the country fighting back against the big government. Any one else notice the type of attention that the media has given this-that is besides Fox News? CNN said there were rallies, but did not state numbers, and drastically lowered the number of people in attendance of each one. MSNBC stated that there was about 700 rallies across the country. WTH????? The organizers believe it may have ended being way over 3000. If Fort Scott can organize a rally with 200 people there, trust me this was a lot bigger than anyone really knew it was going to be. Yes I am a very conservative American, did not say Republican, and yes I watch Fox News, but I always try to watch the liberal stations also to try to see it from their perspective. Last night after flipping to Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddow for just a few minutes I ended up breaking the remote. Really how do idiots like that get jobs on tv?? I guess their ratings that are near or at the bottom doesn't play into the choice to keep them on the air?
I learned about the tax protest from the internet, not tv. I believe the protest included right and left and everyone in between. In that sense it was very good to see people doing something about their frustrations. I think it was misdirected though in blaming Obama. I'm not a Democrat, but I don't believe he caused this problem, but that said, I don't have much faith that he can fix it either.
Mainstream news is very polarized, fox leaning right and cnbc leaning left.
Always remember they(the media) really don't care much one way or the other, it's all really about MARKETING and getting those advertising dollars coming in.
They like to push people's buttons, and do a very good job of it.
The oligarchy that really runs the USA and has it's home in the finance industry and is happy to see us complaining about taxes, the president, various social issues, etc.in fact anything as long as the focus is not on them. They are the ones secretly pillaging all of us, Democrats,Republicans,Libertarians, etc.
This may be a pie in the sky dream, but it is going to take a non-partisan effort to get our country's powerbase back in the White house and out of Wall street.
"This may be a pie in the sky dream, but it is going to take a non-partisan effort to get our country's powerbase back in the White house and out of Wall street."
Agreed. Unfortunately this would require Americans to turn off the TV.

They are the opposite side of the same coin as Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity. Entertainment masquerading as journalism. Lump them all together and you've got something that kills more brain cells than alzheimers.
"You can smell the fear of Democrats. Yes, bring on 2012!!"
typical Kansas republican.
I got my first piece of information on the internet. I mailed tea bags to 2 senators, the white house and the senate on April 1st so they would reach Washington by April 15th. Later read that there would be tea parties accross America by means of the INTERNET- then by means of the TV!! I read in the local paper about the Tea Party at Memorial Hall and was there. I'm proud to stand up for God, America's future and our grandchildrens future. All we're saying is our government must be held "Accountable". Both parties - Read before you sign. LINE BY LINE!!! Bobby Jindal, John Boehner, Glenn Beck, and Rush Limbaugh are in the business of "reporting", Fox News is fair and honest reporting. So don't blame them. Blame the BIG GOVERNMENT that is out of control and out of touch with you and me,,,tax payers. This has been going on for years!! I trust this will be the first of many such protest that will attempt to open our governments eyes. Hopefully before "they" decide" "we" have no voice,,,,just as "they" have "removed" God from so many places and made it illegal to talk to Him in our schools and many public places. We cannot let them continue to lead us down the wrong path. Our voice is small now,,but we can do this and we've only just begun. Remember but your history - David and Goliath, also the first "Tea Party", what our founding fathers fought and died for. This is your wake up call America!!
Quote - ''Stop runaway spending and taxation without representation.'"
You are represented. Just because you didn't get your way in the last election does not mean you are being oppressed.
Funny thing is that about 95% of the people at this rally will experience lower taxes on their 2009 filings.
Tune in to Faux News to see what Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly are crying about today and where they want to herd you to tomorrow.
bluest8er,
You mean we the people are just supposed to vote in our representatives and then sit back, watch and be content with whatever they decide for us? I hope that's not what you mean.
How do you feel about citizens publicly voicing their opinions?
As for faux news, see my previous posts.
No, I am just saying that the quote "no taxation without representation" in this context is ridiculous. It was not ridiculous when Britain taxed the colonies 250 years ago because there was truly not any representation of our colonies in Parliament. Today our representatives are democratically elected and we are represented. If the person representing you did not do the job you desired you have the opportunity to replace that person.
And to answer your second question, I fully support a person's right to voice their opinion. I have exercised it many times and is what makes America great.
When I heard that FS was going to have a rally, I could NOT believe it. Activisim in FS? Nah, can't be true. So, I went to check it out. Good sized crowd for a burg this size. In my opinion it was nothing but an Obama bashing. Same old neocon rhetoric "he is causing our g-children to be saddled with debt". No mention was made that we had a balanced budget prior to the Bush administration and Bush put our national debt over a trillion dollars, not Obama.
All ya all need to look to the real reason for taxes, The Federal Reserve. Turn off your TV's and get informed!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__YFnUfYX...
The Fed is an unconstitutional private corporation who's only purpose is to charge you interest on your money. And now they are doing us the "favor" of taking over Freddy and Fanny and adding real property to their holdings. They are buying us out of our homes for pennies on the dollar. The people behind the TEA parties are sending you on a wild goose chase while they rob you. Writing your legislators is a futile act. They are part of the deception- both parties. Both the Dems and Reps are owned by the corporations.
Eisenhower warned us about these crooks:
