Helen Maloney, 92, former Iola, Kan., resident, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Mercy Health Care in Fort Scott, Kan.

Helen was born July 9, 1916, in the farm home of her parents near Colony, Kan. Her parents were Joseph and May (Irwin) Gregory.

She graduated from Colony High School in 1935 and then taught rural school for one year at Indian Creek. She moved to Wichita where she worked as a nanny for a doctor.

On July 10, 1938, Helen married Joe Maloney in Nevada, Mo., and they made their home in Iola.

She worked at Thompson Poultry for many years before going to work as a cook in area restaurants, the last being Menegay's North. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1972.

She liked to sew, make crafts and quilts, and embroider. Helen moved to Fort Scott to live with family when her health failed.

Survivors include:

Four Sons: Joe Lee Maloney, Jr. and wife, Lavonda of Iola, Kan.; Earl Maloney and wife, Janice of Fort Scott, Kan.; Dale Maloney and wife, Evelyn of Iola, Kan.; and Jim Maloney of Iola, Kan.

One Daughter: Diana Duckworth and husband, Chuck of Victoria, Texas.

One Daughter-In-Law: Sherry Maloney of Victoria, Texas.

One Sister: Eileen Cooper of Iola, Kan.

One Sister-In-Law: Esther Maloney of Humboldt, Kan.

Fifteen Grandchildren, 44 Great-Grandchildren and five Great-Great Grandchildren

She was preceded in death by a son, Albert Leon Maloney, a grandson Darren Maloney, a granddaughter Corina Heard, and a great-grandson Mason Alan Maloney.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola.

Funeral services are 11 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Pastor Marty DeWitt will officiate.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kan.

Memorials are suggested to Mercy Health Care Foundation
