John W. Anderson, 90, of Hepler, Kan., died at 11:51 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2009 in the Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, Kan.
He was born June 8, 1918 at Hepler, a son of John Ralph and Beatrix Winfield (DeLambert) Anderson.
He grew up and attended schools in Hepler and graduated from Hepler High School.
He served in the US Army from Nov. 3, 1942 until January 10, 1946.
He was in the 711th Tank Battalion and served as a tank gunner in the Pacific Theater for 22 months.
He married Doris Irene King on May 10, 1941 in Fort Scott. She preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1993.
As a teenager, he worked at the D. C. Hutcherson Hardware Store in Hepler. He later worked at Boeing and Beechcraft Air in Wichita and also at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons.
He retired from the maintenance crew for the State of Kansas in January of 1983.
Survivors are a daughter, Sonja L. Tersinar and Robert of Walnut, Kansas; a son, Phillip L. Anderson and Shirley of Walnut; grandchildren are: Jeff Tersinar, Gary Tersinar, Sherrie Wright, Tammy Hollister, and TimothyMachin; 21 great-grandchildren; 7great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Todd Anderson, on Feb. 28, 2009; 2 half-sisters and one half-brother.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday at the Hepler Cemetery where George Pitzer will give a eulogy.
Friends may call after 4 p.m., Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
