Cathern Armatha Smith, age 78, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at the Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home in Fort Scott, Kan.

She was born Sept. 12, 1930, in Hutchison, Kan., the daughter of I. W. Ward and Marjorie Siegle Ward.

She married Delbert Lowell Smith in May of 1951. They were later divorced.

Ms. Smith worked for nineteen years as a LPN at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott. She later worked for both the Fort Scott Manor and the Fort Scott Medicalodge.

Cathern was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. In earlier years, she was involved with the Caravan organization of the church.

Survivors include a son, Raymond Smith and friend, Tawnja, Bronaugh, Mo.; two daughters, Sue Cannon and husband, Carlos, Edwardsville, Kan. and Janet Kovacic and husband, Ernest, Stark, Kan.

Also surviving are a brother, Marvin Ward and wife, Clare, Hutchison, Kan. and a sister, Joyce Zerger and husband, Ben, Hutchison, Kan.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald Smith and a brother, Leroy Ward.

Rev. Scott Moore will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 6, 2009, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Lone Elm Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the First Church of the Nazarene and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, Kan 66701.
