ONLINE FIRST: Okla. man sought by area police in business scam

Saturday, January 24, 2009
Local business owners in Southeast Kansas are being warned by the Pittsburg Police Department of a possible scam involving an Okla. salesman.

Pittsburg police were made aware Saturday of Drayton Gibbes, Yukon, Okla., approaching businesses and selling them Car Magnets, stickers, bumper stickers, etc., with local team mascots on them. He is reportedly taking money and not producing the goods that he is selling.

Police report Gibbes as a white, clean-cut male approximately 50-60 years of age in a white rental car with Okla. plates. The license plate numbers are reported to be 998 XGU, but could change as he is traveling in a rental vehicle. The front plate is a Bolen Tag.

Gibbes is introducing himself as an employee with the family business School Spirit Innovations, said Carol Eckman with Pittsburg police.

"This is a Family business and they are not legitimate," she said.

Eckman said Gibbes' home town reported no confrontations with Gibbes, however, other cities in Okla. have confirmed he has been involved with past scams.

"I spoke with Yukon Oklahoma Police Department and they have had no negative dealings with him, But Oklahoma City Has, Said Eckman. "I contacted Mr. Gibbes myself and spoke with him. He is Slick. Quite the talker. I contacted the Yukon Chamber of Commerce and have found out that a family member has been indicted for scamming.

"This is a Family business and they are not legitimate."

Anyone approached by Gibbes is asked to contact Pittsburg or other local law enforcement office while he is still in the business so he can be identified. Eckman did not report any concerns of Gibbes acting with violence Saturday.

Questions concerning this man should be directed to the Oklahoma Attorney General Office at (405) 521-4274.

Gibbes was reported throughout Girard over the past few days. There have not been any reports from Fort Scott or Bourbon County at this time.

Just wanted to say that on 10/8/08 this man was in my place of business here in Bolivar, MO and he is as slick as they come and may I add I am as stupid as they get. I gave him $205.00, which was half the cost of a magnet order and still have yet to see anything from it. NO magnets, money, nothing. I have had numerous conversations with this man and he tells me he will send me my money back, he has filed bankruptcy, his wife is in stage 4 cancer, I'm not listed in the bankruptcy, on and on. I'm really angry with this guy but I must say a lot more angry with myself. Just wanted to vent and see if anyone had any suggestions. thanks
