Davis sixth at Basehor

Monday, January 19, 2009
BASEHOR -- Fort Scott High brought four wrestlers to the Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic here over the weekend. Of those, Denzell Davis earned a sixth-place medal in the 119-pound weight class.

In order to win that medal, Davis had to win a tough quarterfinal match against Cody Phillips of Atchison County. The final score was 10-8.

"The championship quarter final match may have been one of the best comeback finishes in a while," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "Denzell was down 6-0 going into the third period. With just over a minute left in the match Denzell reversed Phillips put him on his back. Phillips managed to get out of bounds with 14 seconds left and held a one point lead. Denzell allowed Phillips a one point escape and immediately threw Phillips to his back for the victory."

Fort Scott's other three opponents each finished one match short of a chance to medal. In this 32-school tournament, eight medals were awarded.

Class 6A Goddard won the tournament with 231 1/2 points. Lansing was second with 179 1/2 while Andale was third with 124 1/2. Fort Scott scored 29 team points and finished in 30th place.

Davis pinned Max Mancuso of Lenexa St. James in his first match of the day. Next, he won by an injury default over Dawson Elliott of Goddard. His won over Phillips was the third match. In the championship semifinals, Olathe North's Josh Neal won over Davis by a major decision, 15-6.

In the consolation bracket, Davis lost to Jordan Risstau of Junction City by pin. In the sixth-place bout, Pittsburg's Mario Corado also scored a pin.

Justin Sharp wrestled at 125. He defeated Tonganoxie's Forrest Caroll by pin in his first match. Rossville's Mark Smith pinned Sharp in the next match.

In consolation, Sharp won a 7-0 decision over Kansas City-Harmon's Mike Baker and a 6-3 verdict over Eudora's Jackson Wiley. Mitchell Belle of Goddard eliminated Sharp with a 10-8 decision.

Lee Culbertson wrestled at 152 for the Tigers. He drew a first-round bye then was pinned by Eric Grant of Olathe North. In consolation, Culbertson pinned Atchison County's Sam Rourk and took a 12-4 decision over Olathe South's Aaron Robinson. Colton Gentry of Rossville eliminated Culbertson with a pin.

Blake Cowen, wrestling 160, also began the day with a bye. Goddard's Tyler Caldwell then scored a pinfall win. Cowen came back in consolation to pin Harmon's Justin Vogel and Kansas City-Piper's Tyler Coffey before he was ousted by Baldwin's Colin Busby on a 16-3 major decision.

The Tigers will go to Coffeyville Thursday night for a Southeast Kansas League triangular against Parsons and the host Golden Tornado. Varsity and junior varsity action is expected to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Field Kindley High School.
