The expansion of the Fort Scott High School Dual Wrestling Tournament to eight teams this year provided more drama for the championship match than anyone could have imagined. Shawnee Mission West survived a serious gaffe in the last match of the championship dual to win the team title Saturday afternoon at the FSHS gymnasium.

Fort Scott finished fifth in the tournament after winning one of three pool matches and defeating first-time entrant Labette County, 42-27, in the fifth-place dual. Another area school, Jayhawk-Linn, also participated. But the short-handed Jayhawks were unable to win a dual and finished eighth.

Previously, the Fort Scott Tournament had been a six-team round robin and there had been times when the two best teams had wrestled early in the day, meaning that the title had already been determined when the last duals were held. With the expansion to eight teams, the teams were divided into two four-team pools. There was an extra "cross-pool" round between pool matches and the placement matches so that each team would have five duals -- the same as in previous years.

The pool winners, Louisburg and Shawnee Mission West, squared off for first place. West was leading 42-36 with one match remaining between the schools' heavyweights. All West's Alex Meek had to do in that match was avoid getting pinned by Louisburg's Tyler Ewy.

Meek had the lead in the third period as he and Ewy grappled near the boundary line. Suddenly, Meek let up, acting as though he had heard a whistle. But there hadn't been one and Ewy wisely took Meek down and pinned him.

That tied the dual at 42-42 and brought up the question of whether there would be co-champions or if there was some sort of tiebreaker provision. Fort Scott head coach David Brown, realizing a tie was possible, had already dug up the National High School Federation's rulebook, which did have a list of tiebreakers.

"This is a nice set up and it was wonderful that the national federation anticipates such things as that," Brown said. "I've not been involved in a tremendous number of dual tournaments. It's becoming a more popular format because it allows kids to wrestle more matches in a day. And this was the first one I've heard of that's come down to a tie-breaker. And I may live to be 80 and never see it again. I think it's safe to say that it's pretty rare."

The rule that applied -- the fifth tiebreaker from what we could tell -- was the number of times each teams' wrestlers scored the first points in each match of that dual. It so happened that West's wrestlers did so more often, thus the Vikings were named winners of the tournament (the dual itself remains a tie as the tie-breaker was only for the tournament title).

Among the highlights for the Tigers:

* Justin Sharp was 4-1 on the day in the 119- and 125-pound weight classes, including a 17-2 technical fall over Wichita South's Victor Heiar and a pin of Jayhawk-Linn's Trevor Laporte. He and Denzell Davis wrestled matches in both weight classes. Davis was 3-2 on the day.

"Justin Sharp did a great job today," Brown said. "He lost a tight match against Labette County and that guy will be a pretty big challenge for him over the course of the season. He'll have another (Southeast Kansas League) match-up and then a Regional match-up and maybe a State tournament match-up if we can get him qualified."

* Lee Culbertson, at 152, was also 4-1 with pins over West's Nick Oakley, Labette County's Colten Grant and Cherryvale's Jeremiah Garoutte.

"Lee Culbertson started out pretty rough against Wichita South," Brown noted. "That was a tough kid. But he came back and wrestled hard the rest of the day. He had some good moves on the mat and that shows he's worked pretty hard to get to where he can be a contender for qualifying for State."

* Aaron Judy, at 189, went 4-1, including a pin over Labette County's Quinton Bogner.

* Freshman Jake Karleskint was 3-2 with a pin in the first wrestling match of his athletic career.

"Jake's probably had 10 wrestling practices in his entire life," Brown said. "But he went out and got a pin today and that's a big positive for him."

* Drew Bryant was 3-2 with two pins at 215 pounds. He pinned South's Josh Disney and Labette's Bryce Baker.

* Dakota Singmaster was 3-2 at heavyweight.

There were also efforts that may not look good on paper without some context. For instance, Alec Ramirez was 2-3 on the day at 145 pounds. But the first-year senior came out and got a 12-11 decision over South's Sky Funderburgh in his first varsity match and pinned West's West Throckmorton in his second.

"Alec has been really coachable and he's really made strides in the few weeks that we've had him in practice," Brown said. "That shows that athleticism can do wonderful things. I look for him to improve throughout the season."

Also, freshman Dane Cummings had to step in at 160 pounds for an injured Blake Cowen. He was only 1-4 on the day but lost by only two points to South senior Andrew Merry and got a pin over Cherryvale junior Gavin Thorensen.

"Dane's a real strong kid," Brown said. "He's going to have his battles. He'll face stronger and powerful upperclassmen. He was filling in for Cowen, who's not medically eligible yet after some concussion issues from football."

Jayhawk-Linn's third-year team, coached by former Tiger Brett Kramer, had seven open weights, which meant it gave up 42 points in forfeits -- unless the opposing team had the same weights open -- before the Jayhawks started any of their matches. However, three of its wrestlers went undefeated on the day.

Kramer pointed out that the seven wrestlers he brought to the tournament won 43 of their matches and lost only 15, including Friday action in a season-opening dual at Spring Hill.

Quincy Hodges moved up and down between 160 and 171 pounds and won four of his matches by pin. Alan Johnson won four of his matches by pin at 215 and Caleb Jackson had three pins at 285. All three wrestlers also won a pair of matches at Spring Hill and are 7-0 on the season.

Jared Avery, who moved between 145 and 152 pounds, had a 3-2 record on the day for the Jayhawks. He is 5-2 overall.

With the success -- and the drama -- of the expanded tournament this season, Brown sees the annual season-opening tournament becoming bigger and better in the future.

"We're looking to add two more teams and have a 10-team tournament," Brown said. "It's a great weekend to have it. Those who love wrestling will be here in Fort Scott. We had a lot of compliments from visiting teams that they liked how the tournament was set up and how it ran."

The Tigers' next event will be the two-day Eudora Tournament, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Saturday's action there will begin at 9 a.m.

The next outing for Jayhawk-Linn will be Saturday in a tournament at Anderson County, which also starts at 9 a.m.

Friday: Spring Hill 42, Jayhawk-Linn 33.

The entire Jayhawk lineup wrestled two Spring Hill wrestlers each. Only the first time around was counted as a dual.

Hodges pinned Wes Stiles in a 160-pound match in the dual and Patrick Goldman in a 171-pound bout in the "exhibition" match. Johnson pinned Chris Terrazas in the dual and Steffan Green in the later match. Jackson pinned Michael Martinez in the dual and Justin Monkhonvilay in the exhibition.

Avery also won two matches. He won a 9-4 decision over Jakup Dingus at 145 in the dual and pinned Austin Sander at 152 in the "exhibition."

Laporte pinned Dylan Flynn at 125 in the dual but was pinned by John Chisholm in the exhibition. Tyler Jenkins, at 130, was pinned by Joey McZeagle in the dual but pinned Brandon Tyler at 125 in the exhibition.

David Troth won both his matches, pinning Dustin Doty at 135 in the dual and pinning McZeagle at 130 later.

Eli Walrod won two matches at 285 as exhibitions. He pinned both Monkhonvilay and Terrazas.
