Greyhound women post sweep in Pratt

Monday, December 1, 2008

PRATT -- Fort Scott Community College's women swept both games against Jayhawk Conference-Western Division competition here over the weekend at the Pratt Classic.

Fort Scott also visited Northern Oklahoma College's Tonkawa campus Wednesday night, taking an 83-54 loss. The Greyhounds (5-4) will have a rematch with NOCT at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Arnold Arena.

That will be just the second home game of the season for the Greyhounds and the first of three this week. Fort Scott also plays games at the Jayhawk Conference Shootout in Cofeyville Friday and Saturday.

Friday, the 'Hounds defeated Dodge City, 83-56. Fort Scott shot over 57 percent from the field in the first half in building a 47-27 lead.

Leondra Doomes-Stephens scored 17 points, Kylie Shepard 15 and Valencia Kelly 12 as the three combined to make 18 of 27 fielders.

Dodge City (4-5) shot 40 percent from the floor on 20 of 49. The Conquistadors went just six of 18 in the first half.

Fort Scott scored the first 14 points of the game Saturday night, then held off a late charge by the Beavers to win 51-41. Doomes-Stephens connected on 14 of 27 field-goal tries, going five of eight from three-point range as she finished with 33 points. It was her third 30-point game as a 'Hound -- her first this season. She was one point shy of her career best of 34, scored February 2 against Coffeyville.

Joy Hathaway added 10 points for the 'Hounds as she made all four of her field-goal tries. Doomes-Stephens and Hathaway each had 11 rebounds as Fort Scott won the battle of the boards, 40-28.

Doomes-Stephens had 20 of Fort Scott's 27 first-half points, while the rest of the Greyhounds went two-for-ten from the floor.

Pratt (4-7) steadily chipped away at Fort Scott's lead early in the second half, and pulled within three on a free throw by Wyneisha Webb with 3:30 left in the game. But, Doomes-Stephens hit back-to-back threes a minute apart to put the Greyhounds back ahead by nine with 2:03 to go.

Doomes-Stephens also had six steals.

In Wednesday night's game at Tonkawa, Fort Scott shot only 40 percent from the field and was outrebounded, 42-29. The Greyhounds had only nine offensive rebounds. They also made only 17 of 32 free-throw attempts.

Doomes-Stephens had 12 points 11 rebounds and eight steals. Valencia Kelly led Fort Scott with 15 points.
