With the help of area residents and churches, Jon and Rosetta Bailes, former missionaries to Haiti and local physician Max Self were able to minister to many needy families in Haiti recently.

Monetary donations contributed to help provide food and medical attention to families in Haiti devastated by several hurricanes totaled more than $17,000, according to Jon Bailes. The Bailes and Self were able to deliver about $6,500 of the assistance on the trip they took on Oct. 30.

"Thanks to your generous giving, we were able to share enough food to feed about 450 families for one to two weeks on the north coast of Haiti," a written letter from the Bailes and Self said.

The remainder of the funds collected will purchase food which will be distributed in the southeast part of Haiti by Arvis Wiggins, a veteran missionary.

While the team was in Haiti, they provided various medical services to needy families, according to the letter.

"Jon and Rosetta Bailes assisted Dr. Max Self to examine, screen for health problems and worm about 800 school children," the letter said. "Around 200 other people living near the churches also received medical care."

Several days before the team left for Haiti, area residents assembled around them at the airport to pray for the trip. According to the letter, the team felt the effects of those prayers while they were in Haiti.

"We could certainly see your prayers at work on this mission," the letter said. "The Haitians send your their thanks and love."

Bailes said the missionary team would like the opportunity to share portions of their trip with local residents at 6 p.m. on Sunday, at West Park Church of the Nazarene. The general public is invited to view a slide presentation of the trip to Haiti.
