The Tigers (17-6 overall last season) received eight first-place votes as coaches could not vote for their own teams and scored a total of 64 points. Independence received the other first-place vote and was picked second with 52 points.
Fort Scott finished second in the SEK last season behind Labette County (21-3). Both teams qualified for the Kansas Class 4A State Tournament but lost in the first round. The Tigers lost to eventual State champion Andover Central.
"It doesn't mean a whole lot until the end of the season," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong said to the media about the poll. "On any given night any of these (SEK) teams can win a game."
Fort Scott graduated six seniors but will return two starters, senior Kori Page Reinbolt and junior Jolee Sharp. Both were Second Team All-SEK players last season. Point guard Brittany Bingesser and forward Rachel Allen are among the other returning seniors for the Tigers.
Independence, which finished fifth last year, returns four full-time starters and two others who played part-time. There are only two seniors and three juniors out for the Bulldogs (8-12).
"The key to our year is going to be how our sophomores respond to playing varsity time," Indy head coach Dale Reynolds said.
LCHS has two starters back but not much experience overall for head coach Kristi Snider.
"It's going to be a little bit of a rebuilding year," Snider said. "We're inexperienced in a lot of situations but we have a very capable group of young kids. We can just go out and get after people because the pressure isn't there."
Iola (14-8), third last year, was picked for fourth place followed by Chanute, Pittsburg, Coffeyville, Parsons and Columbus.
Chanute (7-13) has only one senior on the team while Pittsburg (4-17) returns four starters. Both Parsons (5-16) and Columbus (10-12) -- which was predicted to fall five places -- have new head coaches.
Fort Scott's season begins Thursday, Dec. 4 at the Willard (Mo.) Classic against Broken Arrow (Okla.), the largest school in Oklahoma.

Ummmm....sounds like maybe sour grapes to me??
Why would you get on here, make a rude comment, about someone you don't even know and not sign your name??? I can guess what city you might be from.
One of the few smart things that coach has ever said......."It doesn't mean a whole lot until the end of the season," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong.
Go guards!
