ONLINE FIRST: Names of Wednesday crash victims released

Thursday, October 30, 2008
A Pittsburg woman was killed in a one vehicle roll-over accident that took place late Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Christina L. Howard, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred just after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of 180th Street and Juniper Rd., about four miles west of U.S. Highway 69. Howard was the passenger of a 1990 Dodge Caravan driven by Erica V. Caldwell, 21, Frontenac.

According to the KHP report, the vehicle was traveling east on Juniper, when dust from the gravel road prevented Caldwell from seeing the approaching intersection. Caldwell lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and struck a tree on the northeast corner of the intersection. It is currently unknown whether Caldwell was wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. She was transported to Mercy Health Center with as-yet undetermined injuries.

Howard was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident.
