Long qualifies for 3A State

MOUND CITY -- Jayhawk-Linn junior Meriel Long qualified for the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet after finishing seventh here Saturday at the Jayhawk-Linn Class 3A Regional Meet at Sugar Valley Golf Course.

Long will compete in the Class 3A State Meet at Wamego Saturday morning. Classes 4A, 2A and 1A will also compete there with the 3A girls' race taking place first at 9 a.m. at the Wamego Country Club.

Pleasanton also acted as host school for a Class 2A Regional Meet here but none of the Blu-Jays were able to qualify for State.

Long ran the 4,000-meter long course in 17 minutes, 28.64 seconds to qualify for State as an at-large finisher.

The individual champion of the 3A girls' race was freshman Kimberly Smith of Allen-Northern Heights, who finished in 16:27.89. Teammate Jasmine King, a junior, was second in 16:32.96.

Team honors went to Northern Heights with 42 points followed by Kansas City Christian with 45 and Burlington with 73. Jayhawk-Linn did not have enough individuals (the minimum is five) entered to qualify for team scoring.

Jayhawk-Linn's other entrant in the girls' race, senior Sylvia Grant, finished 28th in 19:03.94.

In the Class 3A boys' race, run over 5,000 meters, Jayhawk-Linn senior David Troth finished in 41st place with a time of 19:45.52 while sophomore Bryce Northcutt was 52nd in 21:07.42.

The individual winner was senior Nick Anning of Kansas City Christian, who finished in 16:27.91. Sophomore Jake Spence of Baxter Springs was second in 16:50.25.

Kansas City Christian was the team champion with 47 points followed by Wellsville with 99 and Southeast-Cherokee with 106. As in the girls' race, Jayhawk-Linn was not eligible for team scoring.

In the 2A meet, Pleasanton junior Kelly Waddel finished in 34th place in the boys' race in 19:20.46 and senior Dennis Moore was 43rd in 20:05.53. Sophomore Rance Schoenhals was 47th in 21:43.99 and Cole Nickell finished 54th in 27:31.54.

Yates Center senior Dylan Sicka was the individual winner in 16:28.35 with Northeast-Arma sophomore Austin Bogina second in 16:51.66.

Shawnee Maranatha Academy was the boys' team champion, scoring 40 points followed by Olpe with 69 and Pittsburg Colgan with 94.

In the 2A girls' race, Pleasanton senior Rachel Richmond finished in 22nd place with her time of 19:35.52 and senior Cheyenne Reynolds was 30th in 22:11.46.

Neither of Pleasanton's teams were eligible for team scores.

Sophomore Katelyn Henderson of Olpe was the race winner in 15:47.05 with senior Julie Dornecker of Chase County second in 16:21.46.

Maranatha Academy made it a sweep of the team titles as the girls scored 23 points to take first place. Colgan was second with 45 and Olpe third with 56.
