Eagles third at home Regional

MORAN -- Uniontown's golf team took third place here Monday at its own Class 3-2-1A Regional Golf Tournament, advancing to the State Tournament as one of the qualifying teams.

The scores were unusually high at the Sunny Meadows Golf Course, with no individuals able to shoot less than 100. Pittsburg Colgan's Maggie Sloan shot exactly 100 after scoring a 52 on her front nine and a 48 on the back. On this day, that was still good enough to win the individual title. Fredonia's Melissa Ashenfelter was second at 50-55--105.

Uniontown shot 573 as a team, taking the third qualifying spot easily over Yates Center, which finished 21 strokes back. Fredonia was the team champion at 468 with Galena second at 506.

Individually, Veronica Harrison earned the 10th-place individual medal with her score of 67-62--129. Also advancing as members of a qualifying team are Emily Simpson, who shot 67-62--129; Emily Simpson, 67-69--136; Brooke Murrow, 79-89--168; Emily Pulliam, 89-89--178 and Raven Hixson, 90-90--180.

Each player on the top three teams automatically qualify for State. Then the five-best individuals who were not on qualifying teams also go on to State. Sloan took one of those other five spots as did Eureka's Brittany Shaw, who was third individually at 52-53--105, and Yates Center's Maggie German, who was fourth at 51-63--114.

This year is the first year for the combined Class 3-2-1A format as Class 4A was broken away from the combination this year. The first-ever 3-2-1A State Tournament will be held Monday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
