Fort Scott residents planning to exercise their rights

Thursday, October 9, 2008

The 2008 general election is shaping up to be one of the biggest in quite some time. There is no doubt that the increased voting participation is related to the stakes of this year's election.

As many voters are calling this the most significant election in American history, The Fort Scott Tribune spoke with local residents to obtain their opinions.

"Every election is important, but this election is very important," said Julie McClellan, Fort Scott.

The number of registered voters continues to climb. The total number of registered voters in Bourbon County has increased each year since 2006. In 2006 the number was at 9,791 voters growing to 9,968 in 2007 and is currently sitting at 10,085 with less than two weeks left to register. The county saw a spike in registration numbers in 2002 when it increased by nearly 2,000 voters.

"(Voting) is our civic right," said Maria Bahr, Fort Scott. "And since our country has gained that right through the bloodshed of our soldiers, we would exercise that right."

Many people are choosing to exercise their right to vote in order to make a difference. This year's election will hold several changes.

There are two County Commissioner seats open, three state representative seats, and of course the position of President of the United States of America.

"Voting gives a feeling that you are using your voice, if you don't vote you can't complain about who wins," said Crystal Wilson, Fort Scott.

Rachell Arnold of Fort Scott added, "I'm voting to make changes in this world."
