'Hound defense handles one-dimensional Dragons

Monday, September 29, 2008

HUTCHINSON -- Teams that want to have a good night against Fort Scott Community College aren't going to be able to do it with a one-dimensional offense.

Hutchinson brought the Jayhawk Conference's best rushing offense with it to a conference football battle at Gowans Stadium here Saturday night. But it also brought the conference's worst passing offense to the table.

Considering that the No. 11-ranked Greyhounds have handled better-balanced teams such as Kilgore (Texas), Garden City and Coffeyville quite well, it was no surprise that Fort Scott's defense was able to post its second shutout in three weeks as FSCC won 20-0 to remain unbeaten on the season.

"I think our defense did a good job and people will jump on that because of the shutout," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Sims said. "But we consider this a workman-like game. We knew coming in that Hutch was going to run straight at us and beat us up. And we decided that were going to come and be physical, cut down our mistakes and take their best punch."

The plan for the Blue Dragons (1-2 conference, 2-2 overall) offensively was run-heavy. Hutch tailback La'Darrian Page came into the contest as the KJCCC's leading rusher (136.3 yards per game) and he rushed the ball 35 times for 150 yards.

However, 79 of those yards came in the first quarter on 10 caries. In the second quarter, the Greyhounds held him to minus-2 yards on nine carries. And in the second half, he managed only 75 yards on 16 carries -- just a tad over half of what he averaged in the first quarter.

Greyhound fans know how Fort Scott's offense runs the ball with the plan to wear out the defense and get yards later when the defenders tire. Well, Hutch appeared to be trying the same thing. But instead of Fort Scott's defense tiring, it got stronger.

"La'Darrian Page is a good football player," Sims said. "I think we wore him down. LaVonte David and Jason Pierre-Paul and Jacquain Williams, Coryell Judie are all playing really good. If they're not going to be able to throw the ball and we know they're going to give it to (Page), it's going to be hard to run against us."

Hutch doesn't do Page any favors with its lack of passing game. The Dragons didn't attempt any passes in the first quarter and only five in the first three quarters, completing one.

By the time the Dragons needed to pass to try and get back into the game, it was clear they wouldn't be able to. Starter Terry McKinnon completed three of 12 passes on the night for a mere 29 yards.

Fort Scott (3-0, 4-0) has a more balanced team. The Greyhounds' first touchdown came via the pass, even though they came into the game with the conference's No. 2 rusher, Jasmin Hopkins, the only other KJCCC player averaging over 100 yards a game.

The second touchdown came on special teams hustle. The third one was set up when the defense forced Page to fumble and the 'Hounds recovered.

"We scored on offense, we scored on special teams and we scored after a turnover," Sims said. "All three phases of the game played very well. We got the shutout and we had no turnovers. That gave us the opportunity to succeed today."

'Hound quarterback Zac Dickey and receiver Brandon Kinnie connected seven times in the game. The first time was on a 28-yard pass that moved the ball to the Hutchinson 33 early in the second quarter. The second was on the next play for a touchdown with 10:25 on the clock in the first quarter. The extra point was no good.

Hutchinson's best chance to get on the board came early in the second when the Dragons were able to get to Fort Scott's 19-yard line. But a 36-yard field-goal try by Kelly Roberts fell short.

Later in the period, Hutchinson was lined up to punt from its own 30. The snap sailed over Clinton Stein's head and bounced into the end zone. Stein seemed indecisive over whether he should kick the rolling ball through the end zone or pick it up and try to get out of trouble. By the time he tried to do something, Derrick Stewart was there to fall on the ball in the back of the end zone for the 'Hounds.

The third touchdown was set up when Page lost the ball near midfield with a bit over eight minutes left in the third quarter. Pierre-Paul and Horace Hubbard were in on the hit.

Hopkins ran for 23 yards on the Greyhounds' first play after the recovery, moving the ball to the Hutchinson 28. Fort Scott was going to try a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 at the 19 but was called for illegal procedure. After the penalty, Dickey hit Hopkins on a screen pass to the right side. Hopkins cut up the middle and scored with 6:20 remaining in the third.

Hutchinson did get to the Fort Scott 10-yard line midway through the fourth on a drive aided by a pass-interference penalty. Pierre-Paul stopped a pair of plays inside the 10, including a fourth-down reverse for no gain.

Fort Scott finished the game with 230 total yards to Hutchinson's 194. Hopkins rushed for 48 yards on 20 carries while Dickey rushed for 42 on 11 totes and completed 10 of 16 passes for 122 yards. Kinnie's seven catches netted 91 yards.

Williams was credited with 14 tackles for the 'Hounds, according to Hutchinson's game stats. Hubbard was in on 12 tackles, David Garrett 11, and David 10.

Sims says the Greyhounds have played a schedule as tough as anyone in their first four games but the team has been able to handle it despite playing some very physical football.

"We played Kilgore at Kilgore," Sims pointed out, "Coffeyville, Garden at home and then at Hutch. And I think that's as tough of an opening schedule as you're going to get. And...we were beat up after the Garden and Coffeyvillle games. So to come over here and play physical and strong makes me very, very proud of these guys."

Independence will visit Frary Field Saturday as Fort Scott's Homecoming opponent. The Pirates (2-1, 2-2) fell out of what was a three-way tie for first place after losing at home to Garden City, 23-15, Saturday afternoon.

"Indy is a good team," Sims said. "They've had some nice football players. They're a good team and it won't get that much easier. But we do love playing at home. I hope the people in Fort Scott are getting excited about out season. We've really appreciated all the support that we've gotten. Hopefully, we get a big crowd and have some fun. It'll be Homecoming and we'll try to take the next step."

NOTES -- FSCC opponents have advanced into the red zone (inside the Fort Scott 20-yard line) 10 times in conference play. The opposition has scored on only two of those chances (one touchdown and a field goal).

Fort Scott has itself scored on two of the opponents' red-zone intrusions (a 93-yard interception return against Coffeyville and a 96-yard fumble return against Garden City). Four of the Greyhounds' eight stops have been via a turnover...

According to Hutchinson's sports information office, this was the 11th shutout by Fort Scott over Hutch in the series history....

This was the Greyhounds' third straight win over the Blue Dragons, with the last two coming at Gowans Stadium....

Butler beat Coffeyville, 21-6, to keep its share of the conference lead. It's been over a decade since the Red Ravens last defeated Butler (4-1 overall)....

As for the Hutchinson players with Fort Scott or Bourbon County connections:

* Gage McKinnis, who played for Uniontown through his junior year, returned four punts for 48 yards and caught one pass for three yards. His father, Chad, is Hutchinson's defensive line coach.

* Fort Scott High grad Jacob Lattimer was in on four tackles. His brother, Josh, is the linebackers coach.

* FSHS grad Dakotah Gettler is Hutchinson's backup quarterback. He did not play.

* Former FSCC lineman Thatcher Starling had five tackles, including a sack and 1 1/2 tackles for a loss.

* Rion Rhoades, who coached FSCC to a 7-5 record in 2006 before leaving for Hutchinson, is 4-9 in his season and a half at his alma mater....
